📣Semmelweis holds its position among the world’s top 3️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ universities! As the best higher education institution in Hungary and the region, Semmelweis University continues to be listed among the world’s top 300 in Times Higher Education’s 2025 World University Rankings, climbing 28 places with its overall score rising slightly compared to last year. Of the five areas assessed, Semmelweis University once again performed best in Teaching and improved significantly in several others as well. The institution moved up 123 places in industry-related results (innovation and knowledge transfer) and 71 places in the performance indicator Research Quality, which measures the impact of scientific publications. Honorary doctors are appointed to honor individuals who have made contributions that have or have had great significance for University West, and these two have a strong connection to the university's two areas of strength, Production Technology and Work-Integrated learning. Nomination for Stephen Billett specifically points to the following: Stephen Billett is a highly regarded educator. Over the years, Stephen Billett has contributed in many different ways to the university's operations. To ensure Work-Integrated learning, WIL, as the core of the university's postgraduate education, Billett has contributed at various levels, partly through teaching, but also as a critical reviewer of dissertation scripts, articles and applications. Billett's efforts in the work to WIL-certify all the university's programs at undergraduate and advanced level have been decisive. His biggest contribution is in research where he has designed projects and co-written articles with colleagues. He has a very good knowledge of the WIL-field worldwide. His theoretical models for understanding lifelong learning in different contexts are reflected in many of the university's theses. Strong performance in the categories of teaching and research environment helped the University of Wisconsin-Madison rise to 56th in the 2025 Times Higher Education World University Rankings released last week. The University of Zurich has decided to withdraw from the Times Higher Education World University Ranking stating: "Although rankings purport to comprehensively measure universities’ diverse achievements in teaching and research, they cannot do so as they reduce indicators to a score and focus on quantitative criteria." University rankings can be a useful tool, however, they also carry a number of issues. They often rely heavily on research output and funding, which means they may not accurately reflect the quality of education or student experience. They also often fail to consider diversity, inclusivity, and the specific needs and goals of individual students. The University of Florida was mentioned in an announcement by the Board of Governors about increased research expenditures in the state’s university system. 📈 The Board of Governors announced a substantial rise in research spending across Florida's State University System (SUS). Research expenditures surged to $2.94 billion for the 2022-23 academic year, up by over $400 million from the previous year. 🔎 Notably, the University of Florida played a significant role in this increase. The total surpasses the SUS's 2019 projection of $2.68 billion, putting the state's universities on track to exceed their collective $3 billion goal by 2025.
