Embracing AI in Pharmacovigilance: A Historical Perspective Towards Safer Therapeutics The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in pharmacovigilance (PV) is a progressive journey that began decades ago. The inception of PV dates back to the tragic thalidomide disaster in the 1960s, prompting the World Health Organization to establish a global drug monitoring program. As we ventured into the digital age, the early idea to improve the effectiveness of writing could be to use more concrete examples to illustrate the role of AI in pharmacovigilance. This would help readers better understand the practical applications of AI in drug safety and make the content more engaging. Another idea could be to provide more context on the challenges faced by pharmacovigilance professionals and how AI can help address these challenges. This would help readers appreciate the significance of AI in drug safety and better understand why it is an essential tool for this field. 1990s marked the first use of AI methods for human safety data, with a steady increase in application since the 2000s². These AI algorithms, initially rudimentary, have evolved to process and analyze pharmacovigilance-related data with increasing sophistication, addressing challenges such as data quality and quantity, human resource limitations, and technological advancements³. AI in PV stands as a testament to the relentless pursuit of drug safety. It enhances our ability to predict and prevent adverse drug reactions by sifting through vast databases of patient records, clinical trials, and real-world evidence with unprecedented speed and accuracy. This not only accelerates the detection of potential drug risks but also allows for more personalized risk assessments, tailoring drug safety to individual patient profiles. Moreover, AI’s predictive capabilities are paving the way for proactive pharmacovigilance. Instead of reacting to adverse events, we can now anticipate them, mitigating risks before they manifest. This proactive stance is crucial in ensuring patient safety and maintaining public trust in healthcare systems.
