Britain needs a pay rise. And rent controls. And social (Passive Haus) housing. And loads of stuff. But also a union movement that keeps Class in the conversation please. Why? Because where you're born in class terms in the UK is most likely where you'll end up when you die, because we have a very low rate of social mobility here. This is in addition to this the massive and ever accelerating inequality on this island (which turns into massive health inequalities too with the rich living much longer so they can do even more damage and hoard more assets from us) along with the continuing falling life expectancies for most of us, tumbling living standards and the fact everything seems so damn expensive for most of us. It also leads to politics like we have now where the disconnected Westminster Bubble only talks to itself about itself. This is why I talk about #UBI on each episode of the #workinghourspodleeds I believe we need to get money to people at the bottom now, because you solve poverty by giving people money. If you can't get enough money to not be poor from your work (remember most poor people are in work) then you have to get chronic illnesses and die earlier. That might be great for #pharma and #funeraldirectors but it's not so great for anyone who doesn't hold any assets. People like me. If you're like me and from Leeds or if you're from Leeds and not like me and you think I'm chatting a load of beardy soy nonsense then I'd love to speak to you for my #leedspodcast (And no, I'm not working class, I'm formerly lower middle class now precariat, that's right I've gone down in the world. Today is Latina Equal Pay Day and we are highlighting the disparities Latinas face in the workforce. According to EqualPayToday.org, Latina women working full-time year-round earn 58 cents for every dollar a white, non-Hispanic man makes. The gap widens to 51 cents for every dollar a white non-Hispanic make earns when we look at women working part time, or as seasonal or migrant workers. Due to occupational segregation, Latina women are overrepresented in industries that pay low wages. Latina immigrant workers are vulnerable as their citizenship status leaves them unprotected from wage theft. Closing the pay gap is essential for all women and their communities to thrive. #EqualPayDay #EqualPayCA

As someone passionate about fairness and equal opportunities for all, I find the recent analysis of the gender wage gap in Washington concerning. There's still work to ensure that women have access to the same career opportunities and pay as men. Grace Yoo's insights into occupational segregation shed light on one aspect of this issue, highlighting the need for a more inclusive approach to workforce development. Initiatives like Activate 3.8 offer a promising path forward, emphasizing the importance of early exposure to diverse career options and support systems like childcare. How do we tackle the ethnicity pay gap? On average in the UK, Black workers with degrees earn 23.1% less than White workers, and Black people with A-levels get paid around 14.3% less than their White colleagues. For the ethnicity pay gap to be closed, more attention must be given to these statistics and awareness must be widespread in order to achieve equal pay for black and ethnically diverse workers. Corporate monitoring of the gender pay gap is mandatory in the UK, but the same cannot be said for the ethnicity pay gap. Campaign groups have however been working to bring about change – January 8th is marked as Ethnicity Pay Gap Day, and despite universal mandatory pay gap reporting being voted down in parliament in 2021, there is now an Ethnicity Pay Gap Summit, which aims to foster constructive conversations and find solutions to tackle the issue of pay for ethnically diverse workers. International Equal Pay Day represents the longstanding efforts towards the achievement of equal pay for work of equal value. It further builds on the United Nations' commitment to human rights and against all forms of discrimination, including discrimination against women and girls. This year's theme is "it doesn't add up." The national gender pay gap measures the difference between the average weekly full-time base salary earnings of women and men, expressed as a percentage of men's earnings. It is a measure of women's overall position in the paid workforce and does not compare like roles. Our new Labour government has recently set out the legislative agenda for their first months, which includes a draft Equality (Race and Disability) Bill. This bill proposes to “enshrine the full right to equal pay law” for disabled people and ethnic minorities. The same bill also proposes mandatory ethnicity and disability pay gap reporting. Changes are afoot and we await the draft legislation for further details.
