Friday and Saturday I participated (online) in a workshop on "Refugee Entrepreneurship in the EU", organized by Universität Greifswald. There were many interested and important insights on how we can help Ukrainians through entrepreneurship, both in and outside Ukraine. I had the pleasure to present my ongoing research with Paul Steffens, PhD on Ukrainian refugee entrepreneurs. The project is done in collaboration with Danske Iværksættere - Danish Entrepreneurs. #Abstract Among public agencies there is a strong interest in supporting and promoting refugee entrepreneurs, as a way of integrating refugees into the host society and to transform obligations to host refugees into a positive societal resource. Yet, the success of such support initiatives depends on understanding the unique circumstances and mechanisms that shape the entrepreneurial progress among refugee entrepreneurs. In this study, we follow Ukrainian refugee entrepreneurs participating in entrepreneurship training programs in Denmark, Sweden and Norway (n=179). We investigate the extent to which they perceive other ongoing, causally entangled crises as opportunities or constraints; how psychological capital together with personal initiative shapes these crises perceptions; and the impact of these perceptions on entrepreneurial progress. We find that refugee entrepreneurs perceive crises as opportunities more than as constraints, that individual characteristics matter for crisis perception and that crisis opportunity perception positively influences progress. We discuss implications for government support programs. REFUGEE ENTREPRENEURS 🚨 New Research Alert: Exploring Entrepreneurial Intentions Among Ukrainian Refugees and Migrants in Poland 🚨 We’ve just published a compelling new study comparing the entrepreneurial intentions of Ukrainian war refugees and pre-war economic migrants in Poland. 🔍 In response to Newman et al. (2024), who call for more quantitative and comparative studies to examine refugee entrepreneurship, our recent research offers valuable insights. 📊 Key Finding: In our analysis, gender emerged as a more significant predictor of entrepreneurial intention than migration status—whether someone is a refugee or an economic migrant. My field research, which discusses the entrepreneurial potential of Syrians under Temporary Protection in Turkey and the measures that need to be taken to enhance this potential, has been published by Palgrave. In this study, I conducted in-depth interviews with the directors of NGOs, human rights organizations, and relevant public institutions in Turkey that support refugee entrepreneurship. The research identifies the existing gaps in the field and discusses strategic steps to further elevate the economic contributions of refugee entrepreneurship. I hope this research on enhancing the entrepreneurial potential of Syrian refugees in Turkey will provide valuable guidance to practitioners.

These are real challenges facing young refugee entrepreneurs. We need to be resilient and overcome issues related to societal norms and cultural differences. Most of these challenges can also be overcome through mentorship and creating awareness within government agencies to better support refugee entrepreneurs. #SupportEntrepreneurs
