Crafting Australia’s response to global industrial challenges in the face of geopolitical uncertainty has been a focus of the Albanese government. The first cluster of contributions to The Industry Papers are now online, dealing with the global political forces that are driving a new age of industrial policies. Don’t miss Associate Professor Marina Zhang, Professor Roy Green and Professor Mark Dodgson AO take a deep dive into ambitions for the Future Made in Australia agenda – and press the need for a better understanding of vertical versus horizontal industrial policies. The Centre for Policy Development's Toby Phillips and Esther Koh urge governments to embrace their position as a key player in the economy by setting a shared direction and leading a collaborative and coherent approach to achieving it. And Dr John H Howard from the Acton Institute for Policy Research and Innovation looks at Australia’s research system and compared its structure with our global peers. It is a timely paper, given Australia aspirational goal to spend 3% of GDP on research, but no credible plan to achieve this.
