This is a very interesting snip from Channel 4 News (UK) with regards to Gender Based Violence. It highlights the need for accountability and that we can't develop a violence free community unless everyone is working towards this. Data from the UK included in this clip shows that over a 12 month period the number of men who have an allegation (rape, domestic violence and child sex abuse) against them in London is 34,000. Across the whole of the UK the number of women who say they've been sexually assaulted is 800,000. The number of men with a sexual interest in children is approx 250,000. Change is not possible without accountability. Allocating blame to victims because of the clothes they wear, the time/place they were at, or any other factor does not change the fact that violence was perpetrated against them. https://lnkd.in/gXppJ3hU

LATEST: Reducing sexual violence against women and girls 📚 Sexual violence is presented as normal behaviour online; despite assault, rape and incest consisting criminal offences ⚠️ Government intervention couldn't be more urgent ‼️ "The normalisation of online pornography, and the cultural saturation it has achieved, risks turning even the most violent images into a guide to sexuality for many - especially among the younger generation" ✍️ Women's Policy Centre. Insightful overview article about reparations for survivors of conflict-related sexual violence. I would argue that more is required than reparations to reestablish justice, but it is clearly important to express recognition of the suffering, and to repudiate sexual violence as a weapon of war. https://lnkd.in/eeV46qV4

As someone who generally steers clear of politics, I recognize the critical importance of understanding what different political parties in the UK propose regarding sexual crime and abuse. Recently, the CEO of We Are Survivors. provided a comprehensive breakdown of the various parties' manifestos on this crucial issue. It is encouraging to see that all parties appear to give this matter significant attention, at least on paper. Regardless of which party wins the upcoming elections, it is imperative that they are held accountable for their commitments. We must advocate for systemic changes and improvements to ensure that victims of sexual crime and abuse receive the support and justice they deserve. I invite you to read the detailed breakdown here: https://lnkd.in/e5iG9zYT
In the lead up to the #GeneralElection we're asking all political parties and candidates to ensure tackling sexual abuse, rape and sexual exploitation is taken as a priority into the next Parliament. Day 1 on Gender based violence in Nigeria 🤕 The Hidden Scars: Gender-Based Violence in Africa and Its Impact on Girls and Women in Nigeria 🤧 Gender-based violence (GBV) is a pervasive issue in Africa, cutting across cultural, social, and economic boundaries. 🫡 It is an umbrella term encompassing physical, sexual, emotional, and psychological abuse directed at individuals based on their gender. While both men and women may experience GBV, the overwhelming majority of victims are women and girls. 😟 An Overview of GBV in Nigeria In Nigeria, GBV is deeply rooted in societal norms and traditions. 🇳🇬 Harmful cultural practices like child marriage, female genital mutilation, and domestic violence are prevalent. 🇳🇬 According to the National Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS), 30% of Nigerian women aged 15-49 have experienced physical violence, and 10% have faced sexual violence. These numbers are likely underreported due to stigma, fear, and a lack of access to justice. 😩 Urban areas may have better access to legal and health services, yet GBV remains prevalent due to rising cases of sexual harassment in workplaces, domestic violence, and trafficking. Rural areas face an additional challenge: limited awareness and cultural acceptance of violence, with women often lacking the autonomy to speak out. 🤷♀️Impact on the Girl Child and Women’s Health GBV has devastating consequences for women’s physical and mental health. Survivors often suffer from: 🧏♀️Physical Injuries: Ranging from bruises to severe trauma that may result in permanent disabilities. 👩⚖️Reproductive Health Issues: GBV often leads to unwanted pregnancies, unsafe abortions, and sexually transmitted infections like HIV. 👩🔬Mental Health Challenges: Depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are common among survivors. For the girl child, GBV disrupts education, forcing many into early marriages or unsafe labor environments, perpetuating cycles of poverty and dependence. 👩🎨Rural vs. Urban Differences in GBV Urban Areas: While urban settings may have better access to utility 👸Rural Areas: In rural Nigeria, the patriarchal system, illiteracy, and limited access to health facilities exacerbate the issue. Women and girls in rural areas are more likely to experience harmful traditional practice. 🫃Breaking the Cycle of Violence Addressing GBV in Nigeria requires a multi-faceted approach. Education and empowerment of women, strict enforcement of laws, accessible healthcare, and community awareness campaigns are critical. Advocacy efforts must reach rural areas, where cultural barriers are deeply entrenched, while urban initiatives should focus on workplace safety and mental health support for survivors. 💇♀️Ending gender-based violence is not just a women’s issue; it is a societal responsibility. Protecting women and girls ensures healthier communities, stronger economies, and a brighter future for Nigeria. #Gender-BasedViolence
Last year, more and more women and girls living through war or armed conflicts experienced sexual violence, incl. rape as a weapon of war. Sexual violence is used as a tactic to 🙅🏻♀️ Terrorize 🙅🏻♀️ Humiliate 🙅🏻♀️ Dominate Violence against women and girls is never inevitable. All warring parties have a responsibility to prevent and #EndViolence against women and girls bit.ly/4hOA32s #NoExcuse
