♻️Big News for the future of us all♻️ Are you Interested in our Wieland sustainability strategy and the latest facts, figures and data on what we have achieved so far? ✅ Then check the following! #wieland #empoweringsuccess #sustainability #copper #carbonfootprint
Our actions today impact our world of tomorrow. Therefore, we at Wieland take sustainability seriously and aim to set the industry standard in the long-term. In our new #SustainabilityReport, published today, you will get an overview of the milestones we have achieved so far as well as the ambitious targets we have set for the years to come. In fiscal year 2022/23 we created a new corporate function called “Sustainability & Technology,” bundling all competencies to anchor sustainability even more firmly throughout the entire Wieland Group and thus position ourselves as fit for the future. Another important step was our commitment to setting a long-term emission reduction target through the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), aiming to achieve net zero emissions by 2045. In addition, the two new recycling centers in Shelbyville, KY (USA), and in Vöhringen (Germany), which will be commissioned during 2024 and 2025, respectively, play an important role for us in closing material loops and processing scrap. As for electrification, we are looking forward to the planned opening of the solar park in Erbach (Germany) later this year. We view our ambitious contribution to sustainability as our responsibility towards future generations. Whether it's environmental protection, sustainable procurement or the safety of our employees: We know that sustainability is an ongoing process that requires continuous efforts, but we are determined to continue on this path. I invite you to accompany us along our path by reading through this report: https://lnkd.in/enV5s9u8 #Wieland #WielandGroup #CreatingValueForGenerations #EnablingSustainability #EnablingInnovation

DAY 2: CRMs, BATTERY 2030+ We learned new advances in recycling through the ReUse Batteries, RENOVATE EU (Eliana Quartarone), and Revitalise (Sulalit Bandyopadhyay) sessions. key learnings: Innovative methods for repurposing battery materials, and circular and chemistry-neutral approaches for recycling and recovering battery waste feeds. Special discussions on high-purity pre-treatment, direct recycling, and green hydrometallurgical approaches for recycling Lithium Ion and Sodium Ion batteries. Looking towards "Made in Europe," Brecht Dewulf from KU Leuven – SOLVOMET R&I Centre explained the MSA-based flowsheet process for producing NMC cathodes, emphasizing a promising step towards self-sufficiency in critical materials. Marcus Jahn from AIT Austrian Institute of Technology discussed innovative technologies designed to strengthen the European raw materials supply chain, which is crucial for the continent's strategic autonomy. We are proud to announce that Leitat is part of the STREAMS Project project. Collaborating with AIT and the consortium, we are contributing to robotic battery dismantling, metal extraction, and recovery using membranes and electrochemical techniques. Next week, we are heading to TÜBİTAK for the next General Assembly (already!) Interested in knowing how our expertise can support you in solving R&D issues in CRMs? Reach out! What happens to EV batteries after their first use? Who is willing to reuse them? For which purposes? And how should we structure the supply chains for those second, third, nth lives? Here comes the results from our longitudinal case study where we present the findings from multiple data collection rounds between 2017-2021. We propose the characteristics of product-oriented, use-oriented, and result-oriented circular business models with a particular focus on their respective supply chain configurations. Great collaboration with a great team of course: Patricia van Loon, Árni Halldórsson, John Fransson and Fredrik Josefson The article can be found open-access at the below link. Feel free to reach out if you want to learn more about our research on circular EV battery supply chains and our new project funded by Area of Advance Transport / Chalmers University of Technology https://lnkd.in/diMA9pg2

🔄 🌟 #Recycling of Solid-State Batteries: Promising Approaches Published in "Nature Energy" 🔋 Amidst the energy transition and the increasing use of rechargeable #battery storage, solid-state batteries hold significant promise due to their potentially higher energy and power density, as well as enhanced safety compared to conventional lithium-ion batteries. However, addressing the rising demand for primary materials and potential material shortages necessitates tailored recycling processes for various types of solid-state batteries. 📃 A recent publication in the prestigious journal "Nature Energy" presents solutions for recycling different solid-state battery types. The paper focuses specifically on current recycling strategies for various solid-state batteries (SSBs). The focus is on promising solid electrolytes (SEs), including oxides, sulphides/thiophosphates/halides and polymers, as well as combinations of these (so-called hybrid solid electrolytes). The fundamental knowledge for these recycling strategies is being developed through ongoing research at the BLB - Battery LabFactory Braunschweig. Our COO, Dr Christian Marston be presenting at the Battery Forum - North America on behalf of Altilium Clean Technology. We’re proud to be the only UK company offering a full battery circularity model, which includes zero-carbon EV battery collection, black mass recycling, and chemical refining to create battery-ready CAM for reuse in the EV supply chain. He will be sharing insights into our ground-breaking EcoCathode™ process, which is revolutionising the production of P-CAM and CAM from recycling old EV batteries. This process not only cuts emissions by over 60% but also reduces costs by 20% compared to traditional supply chains. As the global automotive industry accelerates its shift towards EVs, the demand for critical battery materials such as lithium, nickel, and cobalt are surging. However, sourcing these essential metals often comes with significant environmental and societal challenges, including geopolitical tensions. To address these issues, the EU has introduced new regulations requiring battery manufacturers to incorporate recycled materials into their products—an important topic he will cover in his talk.
