There is something off about this. Let's lock away these powerful devices, capable of incredible compute, advance calculation, able to research and reference vast libraries at little expense.. Instead of leveraging them, let's invest in locking them away. The disconnect between the educational environment we construct and the real world is so vast it's absurd. Then schools invest in trying to secure resources like Chromebooks for kids. A handicapped laptop that offers less compute or capability than each of those locked up devices and is so far removed from normal workplace applications or power use that we normalize inferior resources as if that's the skill set the workforce wants.
We are a no cell phone school. We did it! No cute name for it. Students may not have a phone/smart device on them, in their bag, or in their locker. If they are caught with a phone they are suspended. We are all in for our kids. We share that this rule is in place to keep kids safe. Our families agree and it’s going well.

The conversation about cell phones in schools needs a lot more room for nuance than we’ve given it. As a clinical social worker friend of mine often reminds me: multiple things can be—and often are—true at the same time. Cell phones in schools ARE: 🔹Distracting for students and adults alike 🔹Challenging for already over-stretched teachers and school leaders Cell phones in schools are ALSO: 🔹Tools that today’s students will use and have access to in nearly every other context, every day for the rest of their lives 🔹Often life-lines for students, figuratively in providing access to information and creating communities across distance, and literally in the case of school-shootings This technology forces us to rethink how we teach and students learn AND we can teach and learn better ways to use technology. Technology bans have serious consequences AND schools need support to approach this challenge differently. People rightly want and need solutions. But in finding those solutions I’d challenge us all to not perpetuate all/nothing, black/white, ban/wild-west narratives.

How often do we see people from diverse backgrounds using social media to comment on a particular issue to strengthen their rigid and authoritarian beliefs? This is often part of a broader social and educational effort to align everyone with their perspective. The intensity of these fleeting comments is commonly seen in conservative communities, which use a form of 'schadenfreude' to reinforce their self-righteous and distinct worldview. They insulate themselves by primarily interacting with like-minded individuals, creating real-world echo chambers that we often see on social media groups. The post below illustrates my pet peeve: when adults who should know better clearly demonstrate their limited capacity to see the bigger picture beyond their self-imposed intellectual and social constraints. My response to the principal was intended to be curt, as sometimes you need to rip the plaster off, a strategy which should be familiar to the conservative mindset: "So you are educating them by denying them education (via immediate suspension)? Are you running a prison service or an educational facility populated by kids who may appear physically as adults but are still evolving their prosocial, moral and emotional skills? Not only are they going through intense hormonal changes and lack a fully functioning executive control system, called a pre-frontal cortex, but that is also required for emotional and impulse control (I'm guessing you do know that as a teacher unless you wagged that class? (This may surprise many to realise you'll need to wait until at least 25 years of age for that to happen…. As a famous Kiwi psychologist (Nigel Latte) once described, teenagers act as if they were effectively brain-damaged' between ages 12 and 19). And to those who blindly supported the Principal’s authoritarian and dogmatic strategy without understanding the nuances of teenage developmental issues (often comparing your view as the perfect baseline), you, too, have not reached certain developmental milestones of an adult, by the sounds of it!"

In September 2023, I bought a secondhand Numark CDMIX1 on Tori.fi. The seller informed me that one of the channels was broken, but I decided to take the risk and buy it anyway. Sure enough, the B channel was quiet. I took the CD mixer to a local repair shop, but they asked if I had the service manual. After scouring the internet with no success, I found a lead on a DJ forum suggesting that Numark had emailed someone a service manual before. However, when I contacted Numark, they told me they don’t release service manuals, even for their legacy products—except to authorised repair shops. In the end, the repair shop figured out that the issue was with the Buffer PCB for the B channel and told me that if I could find a replacement, the mixer could probably be fixed. Fortunately, I found one on eBay, and sure enough, it worked! We managed to fix the issue without the service manual. But if I had access to it, we could have saved time, energy, and the costs associated with researching and shipping parts. Since today is International Repair Day, I wanted to share this story as a reminder not to give up when something’s broken. More importantly, it’s time for companies to release their service manuals for consumer products, especially for legacy items. It benefits both consumers and the environment. #internationalrepairday #repairday #nevergiveup 🪡✊🪛 The Restart Project Right to Repair Europe Tampere Hacklab ry
