"Whilst much is done to understand how to turn data into insights, there is a critical need to focus on the whole science of end to end data pipelines, the costs, burdens and trade offs, and how data and business processes are inextricably linked if we are to truly unlock the value of data." read more in my recent blog for techUK

Transparency and Open Data - Transparency is at the heart of what we do. Our residents deserve to know how decisions are made, how their tax dollars are spent, and how we’re working to improve the community. Open data initiatives have been a game-changer in this area, making government information more accessible to the public. An article from GovTech recently highlighted how open data can strengthen trust between governments and their communities. We’ve seen that when residents can see for themselves the needs in the community and the costs associated with addressing those needs through City service delivery, it builds a stronger relationship based on trust and accountability. Our goal is to ensure that transparency is more than a buzzword—it’s a daily practice. Read more here. #Transparency #OpenData" https://lnkd.in/g27VkqhB

The Local Digital team in the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government has begun a discovery project to understand the potential for scaling up data standards in local government. I'll be interested to see if this produces much in the way of standards to support the use of application programming interfaces (APIs) in the sector. At UKAuthority we've recently completed a research project revealing that there are still frustrations with the limited availability of APIs - a crucial mechanism for the sharing and reuse of data - and that a need for more standards is one of the main factors. I wouldn't expect a solution to emerge quickly from the Local Digital effort but hopefully it will provide a significant boost for the effort. https://lnkd.in/exH_fRH9 #localgovernment #datastandards

The Scottish Government’s Digital Directorate has published a report with recommendations for increasing the value of open data from the country’s public sector. It may seem to be a late move - open data has now been on the public sector agenda for several years - and the main points are broad brush rather than detailed. But it is a step in the right direction for public services in Scotland. https://lnkd.in/ewwUeu2M #opendata #scotland

#ICYMI The Federal Chief Data Officers Council and the Federal Committee on Statistical Methodology announced the successful completion of the Building Trust and FAIRness Into The Process for Finding and Using Government Data Project (FAIRness Project). The primary objective of the FAIRness Project is to make federal #data more discoverable and useful by modernizing the Federal Government’s data cataloging system. The project will help agencies transition from the decade-old DCAT-US 1.1 schema to the newly proposed DCAT-US 3.0. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eMJUqzbd

Having been a V-Dem Institute country expert, I highly recommend applying to contribute to their country reports. It’s a unique opportunity to be part of the global and rather unique effort to ''quantify democracy'' while deepening your own understanding of what democracy means and how we can improve it. Plus, it’s a really good way to refresh your knowledge about a specific country and its democratic processes. If you're passionate about governance and research, this is an experience you don’t want to miss! #Democracy #Governance #ResearchOpportunity
📢 Targeted Call for Country Experts For the coming data collection cycle in January, we welcome additonal applications from experts on a few countries and subject areas/surveys. Find out more here: https://lnkd.in/dFTbFSZN V-Dem’s data is a mix of observable data (official statistics) and expert coded data. More than 4200 Country Experts have contributed to the V-Dem project over the years, providing detailed, local knowledge via our online surveys. We use experts because many key features of democracy are not directly observable. For example, it is easy to observe whether or not a legislature has the legal right to investigate an executive. However, assessing the extent to which the legislature actually does so requires evaluation by experts with extensive conceptual and case knowledge. Ellie's insights about her work on GOV.UK Registers have sparked brilliant discussions over the past few weeks. "I relate to much of what you've written, particularly how journeys and user needs can't quite capture the impact or story of an infrastructure project." "Really great to see how you've extended the thinking to climate impact." "I think the really tricky problem that we need to solve is a human one. "Owning" the info seems to suggest power, and people aren't willing to "lose" that. It's that wider cultural challenge that I think hampers some of this (much needed) work." In her article, Ellie reflects on how her early career experience shaped her understanding of data infrastructure and its potential to transform public services - from the reality of poor data quality in government to how storytelling acts as the essential glue that holds things together and helps vision grow.
