News: Telespazio UK has signed a contract for the Earth Cloud, Aerosol and Radiation Explorer #EarthCARE Data Innovation and Science Cluster (DISC) project with KNMI - Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute as prime contractor and European Space Agency - ESA as the final customer. The radiation mission to study the link between clouds, aerosols and radiation is a joint venture with JAXA: Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency. Telespazio UK will be managing the operational service of the EarthCARE mission towards delivering the best possible quality of data to end users. In total, there are 16 partners from 9 countries involved in the project. They are: KNMI - Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute, Copernicus ECMWF, Tropos, GMV, RMI, McGill University, National Observatory of Athens, German Aerospace Center (DLR), Serco, S[&]T, Environment and Climate Change Canada, Freie Universität Berlin (Free University of Berlin), Werum Software & Systems AG, NV5, Exprivia. The third generation weather satellite, MTG-S1, has just been given the all-clear after passing tough validation tests with flying colors. 🌟🛰️ We provided the control software for the two main instruments of the satellite: 🌡️ The Infrared Sounder (IRS), which measures atmospheric temperature and humidity profiles. 💨 The Copernicus Sentinel-4/Ultraviolet Visible Near-infrared Sounder, which monitors air quality by measuring trace gases such as ozone and nitrogen dioxide. MTG satellites answer to the critical need of detecting and predicting rapidly evolving and potentially dangerous weather events driven by climate change. ⛈️ Now, we are one step closer to seeing them in action in 2025. Led by KNMI - Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute, scientists will soon be able to take a look inside clouds. What goes on inside clouds has never been clearly visible, but with a new satellite #EarthCARE, that might change for good. The satellite was officially launched on 29 May 12:20am (local time: 28 May 3:20pm) in California. From an altitude of 400 kilometres, the satellite will measure #clouds, #aerosols, solar radiation and thermal radiation. This should significantly reduce the uncertainty margin of climate models. It will also improve weather forecasts. EarthCARE is from European space agency European Space Agency - ESA and its Japanese counterpart JAXA: Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency. #Ruisdael partner KNMI is leading the scientific aspect of the mission. Until now, clouds have been observed from the ground, but ground-based instruments can only look at the sky right above and are therefore limited. EarthCARE will use several instruments simultaneously. “This will create a complete picture of a cloud at one moment in one place,” says Gerd Jan van Zadelhoff, project leader at KNMI. “We will soon see for the first time whether our assumptions in the models about clouds are correct.” Once the EarthCARE instruments have been switched on, they will be validated against ground based observations. Wow, careful here! 😅 Most of us probably never saw this effect. Some of us did and still do, I mean astronauts of course (or if you're really one of the unlucky ones who had to go inside a failing nuclear reactor, or if you ever put your head inside a cyclotron—yes, this happened too!) Space radiation poses significant challenges for both human space exploration and satellite technologies. For humans, exposure to high-energy particles can damage DNA, increase cancer risk, and potentially cause acute radiation sickness, with astronauts on the International Space Station receiving 150-250 times more radiation than on Earth. For satellites and space technologies, radiation can degrade electronic components, cause single event effects leading to malfunctions, increase noise in sensors, and induce electrostatic charging. These effects can result in reduced performance, data corruption, or complete system failures. Mitigation strategies include radiation-hardened components, shielding, redundancy, and careful mission planning. As space missions become more ambitious, addressing radiation effects is crucial for ensuring the safety of astronauts and the reliability of space technologies. Ongoing research aims to better understand the space radiation environment and develop more effective countermeasures for both human health and technological resilience in space. 🚀 🛰️ We are thrilled to see the #EarthCARE satellite launched by SpaceX on board a Falcon 9 last night. This joint mission between ESA and JAXA is a giant leap forward for climate research and weather prediction. On board the satellite: 4 complex instruments, including the Multi Spectral Imager (MSI), developed by TNO in a joint partnership with Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd (SSTL), with contributions from Airbus Netherlands B.V. and Xenics. The MSI provides information on clouds and aerosols with channels in the visible, near infrared, shortwave and thermal infrared. This mission is set off to shed new light on the role that clouds and aerosols play in regulating earth’s climate. Data will be used to refine climate and weather prediction models, leading to more accurate forecasts and better decision-making. Tomorrow is the big day! (...or night 🌝) After more than 15 years of development #EarthCARE (derived from Earth Clouds, Aerosols and Radiation Explorer) will be launched! The EarthCARE satellite is in orbit! EarthCARE presents the first mission for Europe and Japan to jointly develop a single Earth observation satellite. Using four special sensors, clouds and aerosols (small particles like dust and dirt that exist in the earth's atmosphere) will be observed on a scale that allows for improved accuracy of climate change predictions. ESA’s Earth Cloud Aerosol and Radiation Explorer (EarthCARE) mission is getting ready for lift-off on a SpaceX Falcon 9 from Vandenberg, California, with a target launch date of no earlier than 28 May 2024. EarthCARE, the most complex of all of ESA’s Earth Explorer missions, will quantify and reduce the uncertainty about the role that clouds and aerosols play in heating and cooling Earth’s atmosphere – contributing to our better understanding of climate change. Understanding and monitoring Earth’s radiation balance is crucial for addressing climate-related issues and is something that can only be done from space. Developed as a cooperation between ESA and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), EarthCARE will examine the roll that clouds and aerosols play in reflecting solar radiation back into space and also in trapping infrared radiation emitted from Earth’s surface. EarthCARE will, for the first time, measure vertical profiles of cloud particles and aerosols, and their fall speed – providing new insights into interactions between clouds, aerosols and precipitation. It will also register the distribution of water droplets and ice crystals and how they are transported in clouds. This essential data will improve the accuracy of both cloud development models and their behaviour, composition and interaction with aerosols, as well as improve future climate models and support numerical weather prediction. #ESA #JAXA #EarthCARE
