🥇🥈 The use of AI and technology in sporting events is ever-growing — and the Paris 2024 summer Olympic Games were no exception. The International Olympic Committee — as well as individual Olympic associations, athletes, coaches and broadcasters — all relied on the use of integrated AI technology both in the lead up to and during the Games to support training, refereeing and broadcasting. As I watched the Olympics it struck me that sport can be a constant stream of fact, opinions, lies, moral dilemmas, plots: an infinitely complex and sophisticated torrent of information. Why would humankind therefore not want to make the whole gig cleverer? Well , there are probably those (you might know them) for whom there is a warm, comfy place called ‘yesterday’ and the fond belief that sport was better? Bless. Whatever your sporting poison, I can say with little fear of contradiction that it is faster, higher, further than in years gone by. The above article written with Morgan Lewis only hints at the technological evolution of sport (it doesn’t need a revolution despite what the techie sports ‘arrivistes’ would have you believe). Put simply, AI is enhancing player performance, personalising training and fan experiences. It’s improving game analysis, equipment innovation, and officiating accuracy; it’s reducing injuries. As AI continues to advance, it will reshape sports through predictive analytics and virtual reality. All of these are exciting and all of them offer regulatory and governance challenges. As for that misty place in the past – it’s called nostalgia – careful with it -it can be addictive. Very insightful 17min video on #AI's impact on the #sports industry. I enjoyed Matthew Candy's comments on how the Wimbledon team with watsonx makes the most of peoples time by creating experiences that allow fans at all levels to personalize the use of their time and access the information they want with personalized content. Great comments about sports use cases that go beyond productivity creating #new experiences. I love how watsonx has been leveraged recently with big events especially the Wimbledon and the Masters tournament. Can't wait to see what is next. The Wimbledon team provided a ringing endorsement of watsonx this past week, commenting at Fortune Brainstorm that "we worked with watsonx because it can be trained in our domain, it can talk the language of Wimbledon."
