“It’s not about the knowledge, it’s about inspiration”. For this week’s Brunchtime Talk, our students had the opportunity to hear from Kat Nilsson (she/her), Head of Public Engagement with Science at the The Francis Crick Institute. After a tour round the Hello Brain! exhibition, Kat described what happens behind the scenes of a major science exhibition. “Behind every exhibition is a big idea - a message that it’s trying to get across”, she says. And that’s just the beginning. There is a whole process of ideating and iterating to get it right, many components to think about and connect together, such as audience, content hierarchy and cost. In the end, when asked what makes a good science museum, she pondered, “I think a good science museum has excellent, inspired, engaging interpretation”.

Future-orientated – Wurm Foundation promotes long-term project of the German Röntgen Museum Once again, the Wurm foundation supports an innovative project of the German Röntgen Museum - the recently founded Röntgen Junior Academy. The new academy is aimed to introduce children of the third to sixth grade who are interested in natural science to the complex topics surrounding X-ray research. The Wurm foundation contributes to this long-term project with substantial financial support. If you want to find out how the first group of young researchers successfully completed the first semester, you will find the whole story in our article in the new #FreshUp. https://lnkd.in/eDM32_xE

Exciting Publication Alert! 📢 I'm thrilled to announce that our latest work, "Multisensory Museum Experience: An Integrative View and Future Research Directions," has been published in the esteemed journal Museum Management and Curatorship. 💡 This paper is available in #OpenAccess. Our work lays the groundwork for nuanced future research endeavours in the fields of #MultisensoryExperience, #VisitorEngagement, and #ExhibitionDesign, particularly within the museum and aesthetic contexts. 💡 Main takeaways of this paper: ✅ Future research directions: 1. Research framework: Selecting pertinent theories for elucidating sensory experiences and identifying pivotal determinants shaping these experiences. 2. Conceptualization of the multisensory museum experience: Sensation, functions of senses, and visitor-exhibition interaction. 3. Role of technology in museum practices: XR technical embodiment and engaging children in the new era. ✅ Managerial implications for museums and aesthetic sites: 1. Set clear criteria to evaluate the exhibition design. 2. Consider situational factors from personal, physical, and sociocultural contexts. 3. Manage what museums can control: The bottom-up and top-down pathways. Huge thanks to my supervisors and co-authors, Lieve Doucé and Karin Nys! Your invaluable guidance and support have made this paper a reality 🎉🎉 #MuseumStudies #MultisensoryExperience #MuseumManagement #PublicationAlert #OpenAccess #ExhibitionDesign

ONLINE WORKSHOP: An Inclusive Future for Scientific Fieldwork. A Workshop hosted by Yale University and the Yale Peabody Museum. Virtual and in person. 13-14 May 2024. Fieldwork is an integral part of the earth, life, and social sciences, but has unique logistical constraints, opportunities, and impacts. These considerations affect who becomes a part of field-based science. There are growing efforts to make scientific fieldwork more inclusive, but these are often siloed or institution-specific, limiting their potential to solve problems that cross-cut disciplines.
