Lots to consider in our newest CAPE - Capabilities in Academic-Policy Engagement report focusing on the importance of regional academic policy engagement and some lessons from activity. Read it here: https://lnkd.in/gFSn-SNr Would love to hear any thoughts!
📑 New report from CAPE: 'Building a National Agenda for Regional Academic-Policy Engagement' following a deep dive discussion exploring emerging models of regional academic-policy engagement across the UK. We suggest that there is an an opportunity for universities to leverage their role as 'anchor institutions' within their regions. More widely, we challenge the UK university sector to work with funders, policymakers and other actors to build a shared regional agenda as part of a larger national movement that strengthens connections between academic research and public policy. Read for insight into: ✔ Different emerging models of regional academic policy engagement across the UK ✔ Specific challenges for regional academic policy engagement ✔ What conditions would enable the growth of regional academic-policy engagement In full: https://lnkd.in/g2gxAub8 With contributions from: London Research and Policy Partnership | Greater London Authority | Yorkshire and Humber Policy Engagement Research Network (YPERN) | Insights North East | WMREDI, University of Birmingham | Yorkshire Universities | University of Nottingham Institute for Policy and Engagement

📃In our new briefing 'Universities: A crucial component of UK R&D' we have drawn on the expertise of our membership to capture the diverse benefits that university-led R&D brings to the research system and society. Explore the briefing to find out more ⬇️⬇️ https://lnkd.in/eiSZ4DnA In this briefing, we highlight six key themes and nine case studies, expanding the evidence base on the value university R&D brings across the UK, and ultimately supporting the sector’s advocacy for these vital institutions. Six key benefits of University R&D identified by CaSE: 1. Knowledge and Expertise 2. Infrastructure and Facilities 3. Convener and Arbitrator 4. Civic and Cultural Contributor 5. Talent and Skills 6. De-risking Research and Innovation 🗣️“The financial challenges facing universities across the UK are significant. Our briefing demonstrates that all those that care about the future of UK R&D must also care about the future of our universities."- Daniel Rathbone, Deputy Executive Director, CaSE.

Excellent briefing. Difficult to choose which part to highlight, but I will go with "Universities have a crucial role in de-risking the research and innovation pipeline. These institutions often take early, high-risk ideas to the point of validated proof-of-concept technology, at which point companies are more willing to carry the innovation forward to market." Greenhouse gas removal is no exception. Without discovery research, anchored by universities, there simply won't be the scaled up solutions that we need by 2050 if there isn't the investment today. Not just a UK problem either - there will be nuances from country to country - but ultimately a global problem.

Exploring Institutional Autonomy and Academic Freedom (@Council on Higher Education Conference) with Ahmed Shaikh, Ronel Blom, Magnate Ntombela, and Esther Martins Today's panel discussion was an eye-opener for me. It struck me that as Private Higher Education Institutions (PHEIs), we might have been fiddling with questions like "Why can't we call ourselves universities?" while our higher education Rome is burning. The discussion made it clear that we have to lift our heads, elevate our dialogues, reform our curricula, and work together to build a diverse but unified higher education system that will serve the needs of our nation. Moreover, fostering trust, both among ourselves and with regulatory bodies, is paramount. We are the leaders we have been waiting for, and our time is now. #Whatwilloursilencesayaboutus?
