"These challenges won’t be solved quickly or easily, but it is clear that there is a community of experts willing to teach, and students willing to learn." With the prison system in crisis, we explore what lessons the UK could learn from international prison-based higher educational programmes and the goals of a new pilot educational initiative launched by Caroline Parker, Ph.D.

Good to read this research showing that the context of education in prison matters. It's not just what you study, but where and how you study and the level of support you receive that has a positive impact on wellbeing. Here is an extract from the report by Dr Erin Condirstone. What makes a difference During my research, I found that the past and current life and educational experiences of those learning in prison can impact their wellbeing in dynamic ways when engaging in prison education. The following elements of learning in a prison environment emerged as contributing to wellbeing in both positive and negative ways: the environment in which education takes place in prison (which includes the physical space in which classes are held) the level of support for education that is provided by the education department and prison as a whole the level of commitment and support of educators the provision, structure and regime of education within the prison
For two years, Dr Erin Condirston - Lecturer at Royal Holloway, University of London - explored the links between education and wellbeing for people in prison. Find out what she discovered in her blog 👇

For sure having reviewed annual "Accessibility Reporting" over the last '3' years pretty sure others are also curious why there appears to be absolutely no change in child exclusions from participating in learning or the disproportionate numbers of the 30% leaving education as functionally and digitally illiterate as they arrived ending-up in the secure youth justice system !? https://lnkd.in/eRQY7MA4 Dear Nigel Why & How to Communicate Your Accessibility Successes It’s just It’s just 3 days until we go live with our webinar ‘Why & How to Communicate your Accessibility Successes (Doing good things is not Enough)’

Coach Smedley will examine common issues in adult and correctional education. This week let's talk about Resistant Students. The key is to determine what they are resisting! Are they resisting your teaching style or method? Are they resisting change? Maybe your students are resisting the fear of failure. Adult learners may carry deep hurts from past school experiences. I go the extra mile to make sure my students know that they are in a safe space for learning. Tips for Resistant Students: * Reinforce that making mistakes is part of the process of learning new things; * Build a learning community where everyone is respected and included; * Ask questions! Don't assume to understand what someone is thinking or feeling; * Give your students time and space. Showing up is a good sign that they want to learn; * Check on your students if they stop showing up; * Genuinely care about them and about their future Coach Smedley is a resource for all adult and correctional educators. One of a few very important issues to me in addition to financial well-being. STEM and Higher Education in Prison.
I am so excited about the release of our paper: Addressing Opportunity Gaps in Higher Education in Prison Programs. Education should be an invaluable route to liberation for everyone, not something that contributes to oppression.

👥 Bulgaria saw over 900 convicted juveniles in 2022, while another 5000 individuals aged under 18 had educational measures for antisocial behaviour imposed. Addressing the unique needs of adolescents in conflict with the law demands a diverse set of skills tailored to their developmental stage and vulnerabilities. Yet, research unveils limited opportunities for prison and probation staff to enhance their knowledge and expertise. 👩🏫 As part of our continuing efforts to improve access to cutting-edge and multidisciplinary training programmes, CSD has partnered with the General Directorate "Execution of Sentences" at the Ministry of Justice in Bulgaria and five other organisations from across the EU in developing a training course on the topic of reforming care in youth correctional facilities. Our latest report serves as a crucial resource, shedding light on the current landscape and ongoing training requirements for those dedicated to working with juvenile offenders. 👇

This just goes to show how much we have come in the last few years digital is now such as part of our teaching practices that we notice when we do not have access to the virtual campus for a number of days #digital #digitalteam #digitalskills
At Novus we provide a vast range of education opportunities in order to meet the individual needs of each learner. However, with the digital landscape constantly evolving it is imperative that we provide digital education in order to prepare learners for the technological world that we currently live in. We work hard to provide our learners with the opportunities necessary to thrive outside a prison setting. This is why we are dedicated to incorporating digital literacy into our prison education programmes. Click on the link below to learn more: https://lnkd.in/gnegFgPT
