The National Institutes of Health, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in association with the National Endowment for the Arts have partnered to expand the scope of an initiative that the NIH has had with the National Symphony Orchestra (NSO) for several years called Sound Health. I never miss an opportunity to experience some sonic medicine as I did on a recent trip to Sedona. The science behind sound healing, reveals how self-created sounds can literally rearrange molecular structure and help with stress levels, sleep, and blood pressure but also increase lymphatic circulation and melatonin production, release endorphins, create new neural pathways in the brain, and release nitric oxide. This partnership aims to: * expand current knowledge and understanding of how listening, performing, or creating music involves intricate circuitry in the brain that could be harnessed for health and wellness applications in daily life, * explore ways to enhance the potential for music as therapy for neurological disorders, * identify future opportunities for research, and * create public awareness about how the brain functions and interacts with music. https://lnkd.in/g7uGtpFc

Discrepancies in emotion recognition are often caused by the frequency with which each expression occurs in everyday social interactions. We frequently encounter facial expressions of happiness, surprise, and sadness in everyday situations. Consequently, familiarity with these expressions enhances the ability to map and recognize emotions on faces. 😶 We had the opportunity to discuss and thoroughly analyze these and many other claims related to emotion recognition from electroencephalographic signals at the 18th IEEE International Conference on Automatic Face and Gesture Recognition. 👩🎓 We held a workshop as part of the event, which was the culmination of months of work related to our research, the creation of a scientific publication, and the organization of the competition. Our study underscored the formidable challenges in EEG-based emotion classification, highlighting the pressing need for improved algorithms and a deeper understanding of emotional neurophysiology. 🧠 It also emphasized the crucial role of large, public datasets in accelerating research and innovation in this field. The event, held at ITU in Istanbul, was a resounding success. We were thrilled to meet the winners of our live competition, a testament to our field's high calibre of research. Moreover, the event provided a unique opportunity to foster new scientific connections, exchange insights, and gain inspiration from our peers. 🤝 Congratulations to the winners once again and we hope to meet again!

Exercise is good for our brain, we know that. 🚴♀️🧠 But WHY, HOW, and WHEN in life?   We are the E-PABS research group at Gymnastik- och idrottshögskolan, GIH, the Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences. A multidisciplinary group of about 45 researchers who all share a deep interest in how physical activity affects brain function and health, including mental health and cognitive functions, in different ways. - Some of us work on the molecular level in the lab 🔬💉 to discover neurophysiological pathways from movement habits to brain health. - Others conduct large population studies 👨👩👧👦 to investigate physical activity habits and brain health in different phases of life, as well as how genetic, environmental, and other factors may play a role. - Some of us do intervention studies aimed at promoting behavior change in, for example, school children 🏫🏃♀️ to become more physically active and to improve brain health. How can we make interventions that are effective, sustainable, and realistic to implement in real life? E-PABS stands for Center of Excellence in Physical Activity, healthy Brain functions, and Sustainability. Together with our long-term collaboration partners in business and other organizations 🤝, we aim to contribute new knowledge that leads to long-term benefits in society. There is some incredible work being done right now in the field of NeuroArts. We are constantly finding and amassing empirical evidence for the transformative power of artistic experiences on our mind-body: our mental and physical health, our social and emotional health, our learning, our surviving and thriving states. I’m very excited about this work and the blueprint “initiative designed to strengthen, standardize, and propel the emerging field of neuroarts.”

I'm so excited to share the results of this pilot study I worked on in collaboration with the Pacific Neuroscience Institute! One of the challenges with functional medicine is that working one-on-one with practitioners can be cost-prohibitive to many people.
