A joy to watch this film. Joy is one of the 10 essential threads of Original Learning - many of the other threads were being mentioned such as risk, time, imagination, interaction, wonder etc Also play. Play is at the heart of children being able to explore their fascinations - an atelier of this kind allows people to play with art materials - to really get to know them. That children with disabilities are being prioritized is fabulous - because if it works for them it usually works for everyone. Recent reading though is making me seriously question the word "special" though - and as an autistic person I have never particularly liked "special rights" - I have the same rights as everyone else - not special ones. Some children/adults need extra support/resources/time in order to access their rights. Special can make it feel a little othering at times. Maybe instead of special school it should be inclusive school? Maybe instead of special needs education - inclusive education? Or rights based education or educational support or? But there definitely needs to be more spaces like this where adults/teachers can practice teaching for/with learner autonomy and can not just know about it, but actually understand it - learning by doing

𝐇𝐎𝐖 𝐃𝐎 𝐖𝐄 𝐈𝐍𝐒𝐏𝐈𝐑𝐄 𝐘𝐎𝐔𝐍𝐆 𝐏𝐄𝐎𝐏𝐋𝐄 𝐈𝐍 𝐌𝐔𝐒𝐄𝐔𝐌𝐒? I visited two big exhibitions this summer, and I was surprised by what I found. The Taylor Swift Songbook Trail at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, was a masterclass in how to merge art, history, and contemporary culture to create something magical. I've written an article outlining my thoughts on why. Read it now - https://lnkd.in/eT3PFEz4

Input wanted: Research into arts residencies in Scotland Dr Anna McLauchlan is currently researching arts residencies in Scotland for a Scottish Society for Art History (SSAH) journal article. She is looking for edits and additions to this google doc, containing organisations and sites in Scotland that routinely host residencies (or did host them in the past): https://lnkd.in/ed3n3KfR She is interested in the breadth of organisations that routinely host residencies (or did so in the past). Categorisation can be tricky, so details about all residency initiative are welcomed. Your input will be acknowledged in any published work – you can add your contact details to the spreadsheet in the ‘source (your name)’ and ‘source contact’ columns OR email [email protected] with your details. The outcomes of this broader research can be requested by emailing [email protected].

New NACC Member Research 🖊️ A new report by The LBJ School of Public Affairs Professor Francie Ostrower sheds light on the artistic and fiscal challenges that 25 performing arts organizations encountered while seeking to build new audiences, yielding insights into approaches that worked, and those that didn’t. Overall, the findings suggest that while expanding audiences is possible, it may not always happen on an organization’s desired terms. Therefore, if organizations want to change how audiences engage with them, they must be open to changing themselves. This research was funded by The Wallace Foundation, and can be found in full at https://lnkd.in/gPAd8xHD. #art #arteducation #audience #sustainability

Attended a discussion between Susette Min and Joshua Chambers-Letson last night at NYU's Institute of Fine Arts about the state of Asian American art exhibitions. It was a pretty heady conversation, but my takeaway was that we will keep having to wrangle with the same questions—how to have representation without ossification, how to have our work considered in an appropriate context, how to make common cause with other marginalized folks, etc.—as long as academic structures and disciplinary boundaries remain in place that were created and enforced by and for WEBCCCHAM. By this, I mean the essentialism of a category called "Asian American art" (or "AAArt") even as we wrestle with the invisibility of many AA artists in art history. It's the same for archives, museums, and all these old institutions where empire continues to echo (like the double-height, filigreed-to-death parlor we sat in last night) through our discussions. There's too much $, prestige, and stability to lose by doing something different. Sigh.

Common ground in decision-making often conjures thoughts of consensus, shared values, and structured dialogue. However, the arts bring a unique dimension to this foundation: they offer a secure and confident space to push boundaries, experiment with ideas, and experience freedom in choice-making. In art, whether in theater, painting, or music, individuals can explore decisions in imaginative, unconventional ways. Artistic expression allows for decision-making without the strict confines of outcome-based goals. This 'freedom to play ' nurtures creativity and builds resilience as individuals learn to navigate uncertainties and explore new perspectives without immediate real-life consequences. See you at Berlin Science Week in five days - get ready; your common sense in decision-making might just get a refresh. https://lnkd.in/emdXq9At
