Many students go to college because of career aspirations and yet nearly half of job seeking college grads regret their major in hindsight. Despite the emphasis on career-readiness, 51% of students visited career services once or less throughout their college journey. We spent months meeting with students, campus leaders, and career services professionals to understand the disconnect. What we uncovered was that students want more opportunities to explore potential career paths in their industry earlier in their journey and they need the structure of a course to invest time in career discovery. ➡ What we created in response are 200-level industry-specific career navigation courses that give students the confidence to discover available career paths, execute the job search process, and practice with professionals in their chosen field. ➡ In addition to the career navigation courses, this fall we also released a free and easy career exploration tool for students to explore their possible career paths. 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗪𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘀 Students from Semester 2 June Intake-24, BA (Hons) Business Management Foundation Programme have revised their Career Action Plans following the insights gained from a recent interview activity. This exercise allowed students to critically evaluate their career goals and strategies, incorporating feedback from the mock interviews to refine their plans. As a result, their revised Career Action Plans now include clearer career objectives, improved skill development strategies, and more structured timelines for achieving key milestones. Is there much value in developing skills if you can’t then articulate them to others? The ability to write an effective CV should be a pretty basic outcome of education. One of the graduates I employed this summer is applying for full time roles at the start of their career. When they applied to work on my summer program I was shocked by their CV after 5 years in one of the UK’s top schools and 4 years at a top university. Their school would have been proud to list their 3 A* at A-level amongst their lists of successful outcomes, their university proud to add their 1st to their list of successful outcomes. Long lists of experiences, interests etc but with no mention of what they had gained or learned, and no way of understanding who they are and what they offer. I offered to go through their CV with them and help them work through their current fog of knowing what their next steps should be. We had to start at step 1. There has been a lot of progress in career education but there remains a long way to go. Career education needs to start early, it needs to be ongoing, and it needs to be integrated with all areas of school life so students learn how to reflect deeply on their holistic learning, holistic growth and holistic impact so they can clearly communicate their ongoing development to others.

This post educates on the importance of sustainability and carbon credentials in the workplace. Engaging with students at the Chelmsford College Green Skills Fair highlighted their interest in collaborating with companies that value sustainability. It's evident that the younger generation is actively seeking opportunities with organisations that prioritise environmental responsibility. The Truth About Career Development: It’s Not Just About Submitting Resumes... To all students and recent graduates: I want to share something crucial about the job search process. My team (Mary Margaret Harvey + Morganne Harrison) and I meet with countless students who express frustration about not hearing back from employers or having submitted several resumes without success. Whenever we hear this, our immediate question is, "What else have you tried, and who have you cultivated relationships with?" In the aftermath of the pandemic and in our increasingly digital world, there's a growing belief that we can achieve our goals on our own. But let me be clear—that couldn't be further from the truth. Success in today’s job market isn’t just about being qualified; it’s about forging authentic relationships and developing those soft skills and intangibles that set you apart. Our students are brilliant and talented, but so are the many others vying for the same opportunities. What will make you stand out? Your ability to build connections, demonstrate emotional intelligence, and show up in spaces where meaningful interactions can happen. This semester, I encourage you to take ownership of your career development journey. Don’t wait for opportunities to come to you—go out and create them.
