California's State Government now uses AI in their tax department. Why? The department gets 10,000 calls every day… But only 375 employees work there… Meaning callers might wait up to 20 minutes to talk to someone. To handle this, the department now uses AI for support calls… And even uses them for live chats and emails. Do you know what this means? AI is the greatest opportunity of this generation. If California (the world's 4th-largest economy) is leveraging AI… Then missing out isn't an option. Are you using AI in your business?

Management May Not See the AI Use Cases That You Do From the 40,000 foot view often required in upper management, the minutiae of tasks performed by individual contributors can seem invisible. This includes simple, yet time-consuming tasks like copying text from one cell in an Excel spreadsheet to another, or into a Word document—activities far removed from the daily experiences of the C-suite. The cumulative time U.S. employees spend on such tasks could be staggering. This is a type of pain point that many in leadership positions may not have recently encountered. Those in leadership positions are even more likely to, as Kevin Roose quipped in Futureproof, "Worry about Skynet, not spreadsheets." It's precisely these kinds of mundane tasks that AI can streamline, potentially saving countless hours. Not to mention how it might improve the mood, creativity, and overall disposition towards work for your employees. Although focusing on these details might not get you recruited by top consulting firms like BCG or Deloitte, leveraging AI to optimize such processes is vital. It enhances efficiency and allows employees to allocate more time to strategic tasks that require human ingenuity. This isn't about creating excitement. Or getting another spin on the hype cycle. As Scott Galloway, aka Prof G, always says stay away from the "sexy" stocks, companies, and trends. Instead he says there's a lot of wisdom buying in and working on the boring but effective things. Individual contributors are best positioned to create the AI solutions to their own problems.
Your R&D team for using AI is your employees, they can better experiment and judge the results of AI co-intelligence than anyone in a central research organizations. And, especially at large companies, it is important to innovate with AI yourself rather than waiting for someone else to do it for you. Paying for frontier AI access for employees, and giving people time and incentives to experiment, is an R&D cost.

Exactly, Ethan Mollick! And to enable employees to be your R&D team, you need to re-think your approach to managing employee use of technology. Asking the question of how to best do that is what led me to the STEP framework I discuss for how we can learn as an organization what the best way to use GenAI is. Without empowering and encouragement of individuals organisations will likely be left with isolated pockets of “shadow ai” - that might or might not be using secure and confidential tools - rather than sharing successes and failures and building some institutional memory and engagement with what can be such a liberating and exciting technology.

All services based businesses: You need to implement AI where you can. Your competition will be incorporating it and they will be able to offer more than you for the same price or even cheaper. Please don’t wait until it becomes mainstream because you’ll set yourself back.

What does this book have to do with AI? A lot of “AI folks” say crap like: a market collapse is imminent, only AI will allow your company to survive. 🤡Nonsense! What will allow your company to survive is a mix that is suuuper hard to predict. This mixture definitely includes people (the most important ingredient), a good product/service (solving a real problem), good timing (luck), and many other factors. Surely AI can be included in this list, as it can rapidly improve processes, diversify products, or automate work. The list goes on... aha okey…yhym I'm not going to push the idea that only custom AI is worth the money, often many solutions can be built on products pulled off the shelf. Of course, custom needs to be built to address specific requirements or hold security internally. Wondering how or if something can be done with a boxed solution? - write to me. Not sure if someone is giving you bad advice by offering a box that may not meet expectations? -write to me. And it's not that I know everything, I do not know most things, but I work with those who do know, they work with the best, they are updated with the biggest AI programms and they don't talk rubbish🫡 Ps. Outlive is a great book. Let’s outlive in a big way🤙 #ai
