B.C. Increases Rent Supplements for Low-Income Seniors ➡ Enhanced Support: B.C. raises monthly rent supplement for low-income seniors in the Shelter Aid for Elderly Renters (SAFER) program. ➡ One-Time Top Up: Qualifying seniors receive a one-time additional payment of $430. ➡ Monthly Subsidy Increase: Monthly subsidies rise by $110, pushing the average monthly assistance to $310. ➡ Expanded Eligibility: Income threshold for program qualification increased from $33,000 to $37,240, adding approximately 4,800 more seniors. ➡ Calls for Further Action: Critics argue for more substantial measures to address rent increases and housing affordability. ➡ Mixed Reactions: Some see the increase as a positive step but insufficient; advocacy groups demand broader changes. ➡ Future Protests Planned: Seniors' advocacy groups to continue raising awareness about senior poverty. ➡ Underutilized Funds: Reports indicate millions in rent subsidies have gone unspent in past years. ➡ No Increase for Non-Seniors: Other low-income renters will not receive the monthly increase but are eligible for a renters' tax credit. ➡ Funding Sources: The one-time top up is federally funded, while the province covers the monthly increase cost. #BCSeniors #HousingCrisis #RentalAssistance #AffordableHousing #PolicyChange #SeniorSupport

After fourteen years of economic mismanagement and austerity, today was the government’s chance to put forward a serious plan to save the nation's finances, rescue our public services, and protect the most vulnerable in our society. Instead, we got more tinkering around the edges, with tweaks to child benefit that will do nothing to address child poverty, a small increase in NHS funding that won’t touch the sides, nothing for renters and families living in unaffordable homes, and only a short-term extension of support for our poorest households. Whilst we welcome steps towards deeper devolution in England, our hopes for a brighter future are undermined if our councils and public services are left to collapse. #Budget2024

I don't always post about things that I read but I had never heard of the acronym ALICE until I read this article that I'm sharing. I see this in Raleigh-in the pockets of poverty in between the spaces of the haves that are doing well, extremely well. It's in the spaces where I could have been trapped, being in foreclosure and choosing to eat and purchase medicine instead of paying the bill that would take all of the funds I had. Read this and begin to understand what others are going through. I wish that our systems had been created to truly help people as opposed to either keeping them trapped in a system that encourages poverty or throws them out completely without any assistance. Why is there no sliding scale for those who are trying to move out of the system, allowing them to slowly increase the money they are making and slowly decrease what they are receiving as help from the government? Why must it be all or nothing? This is how it works for so many women and children and it hampers the ability ti really be self sufficient when you are trying to move in that direction. Well, I am not a politician or a bureaucrat and these are the people with the power to make change in thus area. The system is old and racist because it was created as part of the welfare system that encouraged men to leave the home where they were trying to take care of family in order for women and children to receive the help. Yes. I'm saying the system was built wrong. If men needed assistance to help the family, they shouldn't have been forced to leave it 1st. Especially in a country that is supposed to pride itself on being family friendly and family first. It seems that is only for certain families. Here's the article. https://lnkd.in/eQgs7egx

🚨 A staggering 4.3 million children in the UK, (30% of all children), are living in poverty 🚨 For years the health & well-being of our children has declined due to a lack of funding and prioritisation from the government. We believe two public health taxes can find the necessary funds to tackle child ill health, emotional distress and poverty. 📱 Increase the Digital Services Tax from 2% to 6%. 🍩 Enact the High Fat Salt & Sugar Junk Food Tax. This could raise an estimated £4 billion annually, which we propose be utilised for crucial childhood initiatives such as: 🧡 Therapeutic provision in every primary & secondary school 🧡 Free school meals for primary aged students 🧡 A national play strategy 🧡 A new Child Poverty Act 🧡 A fit-for-purpose Personal, Social, Health Education curriculum with a dedicated resource budget. These positive taxes would not only help children but also improve adult health and reduce NHS costs by addressing obesity, cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and other preventable conditions. In an effort to understand the challenges facing child-headed households, a study conducted in a particular rural area in Zimbabwe found that such households faced strong difficulty in providing for their daily needs including food, education and clothing. The researchers noted that even though some of the children from these households were intergrated into their extended families but they were still mostly on their own. I know we are not Zimbabwe and the reality may not be as severe in SA. But let us not downplay the importance of providing for your children, if anything, your children should remember you as a parent that did not allow even death to stop them from making sure they are fed, clothed, educated, have shelter, and generally taken care of. Be that parent. We have tried our best to help. Some have accepted our help over the years, unfortunately, some have not. We do not wish anything bad upon them of course, only that they would get their affairs in order on time before the inevitable happens. Like a thief it may come. #insurance #children #death #income #financialplanning #financialadvice #anniversary

Latest report from Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) shows the impact of deepening poverty in primary schools and primary and community healthcare. Britain’s public services are staggering under the weight of hardship as primary schools and GP surgeries respond to the needs of those struggling to afford the essentials. JRF asked staff in primary schools and primary and community healthcare services across Britain about the consequences of deepening poverty in their workplace. - 9 in 10 said hardship had had an impact on them as staff, their colleagues or their organisation - 7 in 10 said supporting people who can’t afford the essentials was a challenge in their organisation - 6 in 10 said it made it harder to do their job well Staff in schools and healthcare services told JRF that they are providing food banks, had to find money to take on extra staff and new roles, and support those struggling to afford the essentials like food and clothing. This General Election, political leaders still need to tell us what urgent action they will take to tackle hardship at source. Without this, they can't fix the public services we all rely on. 📖 Read the report in full, here: https://lnkd.in/eJeGi-RM https://lnkd.in/eKhPQ7wQ
