“As ignorable as it is interesting.” That’s the classic definition of ambient music, stated by Brian Eno in 1978 on the sleeve notes to his album Ambient 1:Music for Airports. And he should know, since he basically invented the genre three years earlier with his album Discreet Music. But while Eno’s definition of ambient has been cited continuously in the decades since, the sphere of music he first defined has broadened, especially if you judge by how that word is used by listeners. “#Ambient” is now used to describe all kinds of music, from tracks you can dance to all the way to harsh noise. For our exploration of the greatest ambient albums, we polled critics for their favorites, with the suggestion that “ambient” meant, in part, music that creates an environment, something like a cloud of sound, be it soothing, sad, haunting, or ominous. We also suggested that our take on ambient music shies away from heavy rhythms and tends more toward “drifting” than “driving,” which meant de-emphasizing ambient house. And we considered the fact that not all albums in a given artist’s catalogue qualify as ambient. Taking into account our writers’ interpretation of those loose guidelines, here’s our list of the 50 best ambient albums. https://lnkd.in/eEXjPvy7

Some say that music has changed for the worse over the past few decades. Here are some reasons why: Timbre The texture, color, and quality of sounds in music has decreased since the 1950/60s. Melody, rhythm, and vocals Songs have become more similar to each other, with many using the same note sequence. Harmonic complexity Music has become less complex, which some say makes it sound more homogenous. Loudness Music producers have been making songs louder using compression effects, which some say favors volume over sound quality. Lyrics Lyrics have become simpler, with less vocabulary richness, readability, and complexity. Some say that lyrics also use more words like "me" or "mine" and have more negative emotions. Rhythm and pitch A study found that Billboard hits from the past 73 years have become simpler in rhythm and pitch. https://lnkd.in/g-D3nHVj

National Album Day UK 2024 has a theme of ‘great British groups’. Which modern bands will be brave enough to include themselves? I've been doing a 'straw poll'...asking people name the last British rock band that became a household name. As in, known to mum & dad, the kids, grandparents, friends & colleagues who are less obsessed with music than you are. So far, everyone I have asked has said the same... Arctic Monkeys. Sheffield's finest broke through in the music scene almost 20 years ago. The music industry is a harder environment for bands than it used to be. Labels/distributors can take less risk by signing a bedroom pop solo artist with a social media following. Bands have to share the paltry spoils from streaming four or five ways, making commercial viability harder by a multiple. As for hit records, bands can’t even get a look in on the charts these days. No wonder Oasis see an opportunity to tap into nostalgia. But somehow, bands are so very back. Many are thriving, at least creatively. In this post, I focus on the new crop of great British (and Irish) bands that have crossed The Rubicon - well on the way to longevity and legend. With luck. https://lnkd.in/e8mwMBvT Nothing But Thieves, Wolf Alice, Fontaines D.C., Sam Fender and Another Sky. Who would you add to this list?
