Can AI Really Think? Or Is It Just a Statistical Model Predicting the Next Token? Check my new article on ArXiv: https://lnkd.in/dBSDYXjR The article explores how postmodern philosophy can help us rethink this question. Rather than viewing large language models (LLMs) as models of the mind, I suggest that we consider them as models of language itself—understood as a system of signs. This perspective allows us to understand why predicting the next token might be a valid approach to modeling semantic meaning, even as concepts like truth and knowledge remain uncertain. This article is a preprint, so there's still much to refine in terms of the literature review and conclusions drawn. However, one idea I find particularly intriguing is applying Jacques Derrida's critique of the bias against writing in Western thought to reconsider our understanding of LLMs. Let me know what you think!
