A recent study found that 57% of nurses report feeling misunderstood and unappreciated in the US. It's not surprising- the current healthcare climate of "do more with less" reduces the nursing role to a list of tasks and skills. And, underlying each nurses' experience is their individual perception of what it means to feel valued. How would you know if you felt valued? I think it looks different for each nurse. Ontario needs nurses and has been actively recruiting experienced nurses to immigrate through the Ontario Provincial Nominee Program. But once in Ontario, internationally-educated nurses find it difficult to work as a nurse. A new World Education Services survey reveals that process barriers have inhibited people from registration. Costs of registration, an unclear and/or long timeline, and recent practice requirements are common challenges. This suggests a clear need to reduce complexity so it is easier and faster for internationally-educated nurses to register and begin working in the province.
