On #InternationalMountainDay, the second article in the #Welang project series was shared, highlighting unique aspects of this impactful initiative. This article focuses on Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) implemented in two upstream areas of the Welang Watershed: Surorowo near Mount Bromo and Wonosari near Mount Arjuno 🏔️ International Mountain Day underscores the vital role of mountains in sustainable development. As biodiversity hotspots, critical water sources, and homes to diverse communities, mountains play a crucial part in the ecosystem. This day raises awareness about the need for conservation, climate resilience, and sustainable policies to protect these regions. In the Welang Watershed, NbS have been highly effective in tackling water and erosion challenges. Through the 3R methodology (retention, recharge, reuse), community collaboration led to the creation of simple gully plugs using local materials like bamboo, stones, and branches. These structures slow water flow, reduce erosion, and enhance water infiltration, offering a sustainable and replicable solution for local communities. #training #solidwaste #landfill #feasibilitystudy Last Saturday, I have finished an online training "Feasibilty Study of Landfill Site Plan" held by Universitas Islam Indonesia and Butik Daur Ulang. Recently, five aspects of solid waste management in many regions in Indonesia are facing challenges. In terms of technical operations, the landfill itself is crucial to manage the residue which cannot be treated/recycled/upcycled by waste hubs/waste banks/recycling centers. Moreover, landfill should be managed properly to ensure its operations could be executed according to SOP and its design (controlled or sanitary landfill). If we move back to the landfill site plan, clearly that landfill area must be designed and built according to regulations, spatial planning and teritory of particular regions, social-economy and environmental impacts to the nearest communities, as well as the GHG and leachet management and post landfill closure plans. Gratefully, through this training I got a bunch of insights in recent issues regarding the end point of solid waste management, especially in Indonesia case studies. Last but not least, hopefully the latest policy of banning on the construction of new landfills in Indonesia by 2030 will not hinder the existing solid waste management system 😇

The Environmental Toll of Landfills: Lessons from Bantar Gebang Bantar Gebang, one of the largest landfills in Indonesia, serves as a stark reminder of the devastating environmental consequences of poor waste management: ● Groundwater pollution: Toxic waste seeps into local water sources, contaminating vital supplies for nearby communities. ● Noxious odours: With 60–70% of the waste being organic, the landfill emits intense smells detectable miles away, diminishing the quality of life for residents. ● Methane emissions: A significant contributor to climate change, this landfill releases large amounts of methane, a potent greenhouse gas. ● Soil contamination: Decades of waste accumulation have polluted the soil, harming agriculture and local ecosystems. ● Air pollution: Open waste burning and emissions from decomposing garbage degrade air quality, posing severe health risks. ● Health risks: Polluted air, water, and unstable ground expose thousands of nearby residents to chronic health problems. ● Landslide dangers: The sheer volume of waste creates instability, leading to landslides, such as the 2006 incident that claimed three lives. ● Ecosystem disruption: The landfill has decimated biodiversity and destroyed what was once a thriving area of housing and rice fields. ● Visual pollution: Towering over 50 meters high, the landfill dominates the landscape, creating an imposing “mountain of trash.” Yet, within this environmental crisis lies an opportunity. Bantar Gebang’s waste contains an estimated 180,000 terajoules of energy—equivalent to 7 million tons of coal or nearly 5 million cubic meters of light fuel oil. This highlights the untapped potential for turning waste into a resource through innovative solutions. For South Africa, Bantar Gebang is not just a warning but a call to action. For over a decade, the Restorasi Ekosistem Riau (RER) concessions in Sumatra, Indonesia, have maintained a remarkable record of zero fire incidents. This achievement is especially noteworthy given that the area, a tropical peatland forest twice the size of Singapore, is highly susceptible to fire. A successful fire management approach on RER peatland means protecting peat forests from illegal logging, land claims, uncontrolled drainage and conversion to agricultural crops as well as restoring degraded peatlands through peat re-wetting and tree planting programs. These activities will prevent fires from occurring, but in the case a fire should occur, having trained and well-equipped firefighting teams that are able to respond rapidly will minimize fire size and impacts of smoke and haze.
