However, we overlook the colossal investment required for such life maintenance and prolongation. A new report from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) examines the potential for adding 60 to 95 GW of new nuclear capacity at existing and recently retired nuclear power plant sites. As the USA aim for net-zero emissions by 2050, this preliminary analysis highlights the feasibility of leveraging current sites to meet rising electricity demand. Researchers evaluated 54 operating and 11 retired sites across 31 states, considering factors like site footprint, cooling water availability, and proximity to population centers. The report also explores the possibility of speeding up the licensing process using previously issued licenses. This study aligns with DOE's ongoing research into coal-to-nuclear transitions and underscores the importance of community and utility collaboration in future nuclear developments. Nuclear energy is generated by breaking atoms in a reactor, which #heats water into steam, powers a turbine, and produces electricity. Several governments in affluent countries are sponsoring nuclear reactors, increasing demand for the small modular reactor industry. Advancements in technologies have emerged as the key trend gaining popularity in the small modular reactor market. Major companies operating in the small modular reactor market are developing innovative technologies to strengthen their position in the market. In June 2023, Fortum and Westinghouse Electric Company, one of world’s leading suppliers of safe and innovative nuclear technology, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore prerequisites for the development and deployment of new nuclear in Finland and Sweden. Any potential investment decisions will be made at a later stage. This project aims to develop sites that accommodate both data centers, and new nuclear reactors, addressing the urgent need for clean, reliable power in the rapidly expanding data center sector. This collaboration will enable ANA to rapidly identify and prioritize optimal sites for hosting both data centers and nuclear reactors as an integrated solution, streamlining the path to deployment. What happens when a #nuclear power plant is given 20 years more operating time?   In February 2023, the Finnish Government granted a new operating license for the Loviisa nuclear power plant until 2050. Over the course of the new license period, the power plant is expected to generate up to 170 terawatt-hours of emission-free electricity. Thanks to continuous development and the expertise of our nuclear power professionals, the Loviisa power plant is in good condition.   Long operating lifetime requires major investments. In the last five years alone, we have invested about 200 million euros in power plant improvements, not to even mention all previous modernisation projects. Majority of Swiss Support New Nuclear Power Construction: A recent poll reveals that 53% of the Swiss public is in favor of lifting the ban on building new nuclear power plants. The government is considering amending the Nuclear Energy Act, and discussions will continue into 2025. This marks a shift in public opinion as energy needs grow, and other energy sources face challenges. Oklo and NuScale rally after Google taps small nuclear reactors for AI power (GOOG, OKLO, SMR) Oklo and NuScale Power surged after Google announced the world's first corporate agreement to purchase power from multiple small modular reactors (SMRs) to support AI energy needs. Google plans to buy energy from seven reactors built by Kairos Power, aiming for 500 MW of nuclear power starting at the end of the decade; financial terms were not disclosed.
