New businesses, repeat after me. We are not Liquid Death. New businesses: “We are not Liquid Death.” We are not Surreal. New businesses: “We are not Surreal.” Our target audience is not ‘everyone’. New businesses: “Our target audience is not everyone.” Everything should not taste like chicken. New businesses: "Everything should not taste lik- .... eh?" I’ve lost count of the amount of businesses over the past year who’ve come to me and gone, “We want to be the Liquid Death of [insert industry].” Fuck me. You’ve got a hoover repair shop in Rochdale, mate. Listen, I’m a big believer in developing brands and tones of voice that help people stand out. But standing out does not involve becoming a poor man/woman’s version of something else. Nor does not involve trying to speak to everyone in the world at the same time. Standing out is finding your own voice. Building a brand that looks nothing like anyone else is doing. And identifying the people you want to speak to (whilst not being arsed about pissing off the people you don’t.) When was the last time you entered your store through the front door and not the back entrance? Or visited your website without logging into the back-end system first? As business owners, we get so used to taking the back door, we miss seeing our business from the customer's perspective. When I led a team that included a retail store, I used to take the long route to meetings. Leave the building through the administrative office doors. Walk down the sidewalk. And then enter the store through the same door as our customers. Many times, I got new insights, ideas or saw problems we needed to fix for a better experience. Don't have a physical store? This works for websites, social media profiles, and call centers too. This week, take one area of your business. Test out your services. Schedule a meeting using the calendar link you send people. Search for your business online and click through a link to get to your website. View your social media business page as a member or follower. Or send yourself a test email.
