Not surprised by this news, but robotaxis are safer than human drivers. Here’s a look at the stats: The driverless vehicles ventured over 22 million miles, with only 20 injury-causing crashes reported. This is less than 1/3 of what's expected for human drivers in similar conditions. Out of their 23 severe crashes: 16 involved human drivers who rear-end the Waymo vehicles. Waymo is predicting its vehicles are 1/6 as likely as human drivers to experience crashes triggering airbag deployment. Check out the article for a deeper dive: https://lnkd.in/eFj8CDRP

Robotaxi Goes Rogue in Phoenix! → Waymo car pulled over after driving into the wrong lane. → Incident happened on June 19; police bodycam footage just released. ↳ Shows vehicle weaving in traffic before pulling over. What Happened? → The Waymo car ran a red light and entered oncoming traffic. → Dispatch records say the vehicle "FREAKED OUT." ↳ Officer couldn’t issue a citation to the car's computer. Waymo’s Response → Waymo says the car faced "inconsistent construction signage." → It briefly entered an unoccupied oncoming lane for 30 seconds. ↳ No riders were in the car during the incident. Safety Concerns → Waymo has recalled software twice this year after crashes. → Federal regulators are investigating the safety of its software. ↳ Incidents like this raise questions about robotaxi reliability. #GoodNews posts #optimism: (source: https://humanprogress.org/): Waymo Says Its #DriverlessCars Are 200 Percent Safer Than You - https://lnkd.in/eeMn6Ybd “This month, Waymo posted to X that its vehicles, compared to humans driving the same 14.8 million-mile (23.8 million-km) distance, had 30 fewer injury-causing crashes and 32 fewer police-reported crashes. The company claimed that these figures made their vehicles 3.5x and 2x safer, respectively, than vehicles driven by humans. The breakdown is the sum of 3.83 million San Francisco miles with 17 fewer injury crashes and 12 fewer police-reported crashes, along with 10.92 million Phoenix miles with 13 and 20 fewer, respectively.”
Despite the headlines, Waymo says its driverless cars are 200% safer than you

Interesting analysis of Waymo data suggesting that driverless cars may now be safer than human drivers. However, I would add three caveats: 1) Humans do not always intend to drive safely (one accident mentioned relates to armed robbery), so the data does show that algorithms are 'better' drivers. 2) Since Waymo suspends operations during extreme weather conditions, while human drivers often continue, this skews the data. 3) Data from San Francisco should not be generalized to other regions. For instance, sensors in autonomous vehicles still struggle in extreme weather conditions, which may affect safety in different environments. But noteworthy progress nonetheless! https://lnkd.in/eYjB3f8G

Waymo’s new crash data suggests that driverless cars are significantly safer than human-driven vehicles, with fewer injury-causing crashes and airbag deployments per mile driven. The Rundown summary: * Waymo vehicles have traveled over 22 million miles, with only 20 injury-causing crashes reported. * This rate is less than one-third of what's expected for human drivers in similar conditions. * Out of 23 severe crashes, 16 involved human drivers rear-ending Waymo vehicles. * Waymo estimates its vehicles are one-sixth as likely as human drivers to experience crashes triggering airbag deployment. https://lnkd.in/e6NTirpe

We need to talk about Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). ⚠️ Why? Because ADAS technologies can save lives. 💛 The National Safety Council estimates that approximately 20,000 lives could be saved annually in the U.S. if all vehicles on the road had ADAS features such as Lane Keep Assist and Pedestrian Automatic Braking. 📑 Explore the study to see the impact: https://ow.ly/3Sm850QW4F2. 🔗Discover Continental ADAS technologies: https://ow.ly/q2PJ50QW4EZ #AutonomousMobility #Safety #SafelyThere

Some data viz with a point of view. Waymo is tracking and publicly reporting-out on incidents in which their autonomous vehicles (now a ubiquitous sight on SF streets) are involved. The data points are directly compared to the rates of human-driver incidents. https://lnkd.in/gHyGaRv4 An Examiner article reporting on the same: https://lnkd.in/gaqW-Yzi #datavisualization #dataviz #autonomousvehicles

This is an interesting scenario that one may not conjure up when considering a habitability exclusion on a general liability policy.
Even driverless cars have road rage…at 4 AM…in a parking lot… …they’re so human, after all. Per reports from NBC and ABC in San Francisco, residents started complaining that Waymo vehicles were making too much noise as they tried to park and failed miserably. The result was car shimmies and honking as the robots vied for the best parking spot. I don’t know why this video is so amusing to me, but it brings me much joy to see robots filled with rage when they also can’t find a parking spot. It's so relatable.

Did you know? California's streets turned into a sci-fi movie set with robotaxis from Cruise & Waymo causing mayhem: 🔄 Unpredictable driving & traffic jams. 🚶♀️ A pedestrian severely injured. But here's the twist: These futuristic cars are ticket-proof! In San Francisco, police can't fine driverless cars for bad driving, only for mechanical or registration issues. What's your opinion on this? #cavs #cav #AutonomousVehicles #ForecastingModels #FutureTechInsights

San Francisco crowd mobs and destroys self-driving Jag. A Waymo self-driving car was vandalised and set ablaze by a crowd in San Francisco, according to statements from the Alphabet Inc.-owned company and local authorities. The incident marks the most severe attack on autonomous vehicles in the US so far. The white Jaguar I-PACE was surrounded by a crowd in the city's Chinatown district during Lunar New Year celebrations. A witness said a person jumped onto the Waymo vehicle and shattered its windscreen, followed by another person who also jumped on the hood, to the applause of some in the crowd, according to a report by Reuters. Social media accounts describe people with skateboards breaking the glass and others graffitiing the car. The vehicle was later shown engulfed in flames after someone threw a firework inside. The fire department confirmed that a firework started the blaze, sharing images of the burnt vehicle on social media. The car was not transporting any passengers and no injuries were reported. The San Francisco Police Department is investigating the cause of the fire, but no arrests have been made. Although cars without drivers have become a common sight on San Francisco’s winding and sloping streets, there are long-standing tensions between the city’s residents and the driverless cars. The incident reflects an increasingly hostile public attitude 👉 https://buff.ly/4bKi4r9 #autonomousvehicles #autonomousdriving #automotiveindustry #technology #metaverse #artificialintelligence
