🌟 It's a bold statement, but I believe you can't achieve success in competitive sport without developing your mental fitness 🌟 Over the past two days, I've been chatting and connecting with so many fabulous people at the wonderful Ideasfest. Many people I met either have children who take part in competitive sports, or did themselves when they were younger. The sports they did were pretty varied, including gymnastics, swimming, rugby, athletics, tennis, netball and marathon running. Yet every single one of them told me how they've learned about the importance of mindset in sport performance. I heard so many interesting stories. Someone told me how they had to conquer their mindset in order to learn how to focus better, as they have ADHD. Someone else had to learn how to deal with nasty comments from fellow club members, because she was by far the best performer at the club. And another person talked about how much their performance improved after they worked on managing their negative self talk. Growing up in sport means needing to deal with all the "normal" growing up things and also needing to develop and grow as an athlete on top of that. It's the best because you know at the end of your journey, you'll be stronger that a lot of non-athletes by default: you'll be more tested, you'll have more skills for coping, adjusting, winning. But in different stages of growth: all of the development can be a lot and overwhelming. The growing can look and feel like anxiety or "too much" or like failing. Athletes might benefit from a framework to help them see their story beyond good or bad. Their story can be exactly what they need to gain the strength to be who they are supposed to become.
