Too often, the importance of designing products to last the full lifecycle of a building is underestimated. Easy you leave a hole in the roof and crane it in! Check out this time lapse video I took on site. MSS Solutions, LLC Heede Southeast, Inc. There are a few ways to get equipment into a building. The bigger challenge is WHEN you do it. Sequencing is a crucial part of construction especially mechanical equipment. Too soon and it could get damaged with weather. Too late and it’s hard to get it in. Another consideration is maintenance and/or replacement of the equipment. You got the equipment in, how do you get it out and a new one in. That consideration can affect your decision on where to provide access. As the structure of a building gets completed it’s usually followed by the skin, the exterior wall. Planning for access is key. You can either have a leave out on the side of the building, a section in a solid wall that’s easy to come back and install after OR a hatch in the roof if you don’t have an easy exterior wall to leave out. In our case we chose a hatch because we were surrounded by curtainwall and no easy way to leave a section out. It's EASY to develop complex systems. What's not easy is to develop systems that are elegant in their solution to all the problems attempted to address in more complex systems, and be lower in cost and STRONGER in form compared to more complex systems. A more complex wall system will have - More Opportunities For Error (OFE) in Assembly. - More opportunities for something to go wrong in durability. - More labor required for assembly. - More attention/skill required for assembly. - More materials required for assembly. - More equipment required for assembly. - MORE SUPPLY-LINE ISSUES regarding component availability. - Likely much greater cost of delivery if pre-assembled. - More embedded risk - cost - relative to simpler solutions. When you handicap yourself with antiquated materials, methods or concepts, you sacrifice potential for complacency. Stud frame construction is the 200 yr old antiquated method that many people believe we need to make MORE COMPLEX in order to improve.
