📈 CMS Predictions for 2025 true's Head of Tech, Matt Sutherland, adds his insights to the mix of Umbraco Predictions for the CMS landscape in 2025. Reacting to Orchestrating Composable Digital Ecosystems for Marketers and Users, Matt says: "Having the flexibility to add or remove CMS features, in-line with current needs and available budget, means that marketers can focus more on marketing, and generating ROI, and less on technical headaches, usability issues, and wasted license costs. Orchestrating all of this in a way that continues to be user-friendly and seamless to CMS platform administrators is golden, and the reason why composable architecture will continue to be the best choice for our clients’ digital experience platforms in 2025." 📌 Read the full set of predictions here ➡️ https://lnkd.in/e5jQA5q8

It's not just about integrating two sources. There can be multiple CMSs, and DAMs as well. But before one can implement an integration layer, there needs to be a unified model showing what all these inputs are and validating them. That's why I see JSON Schema as an essential element in realizing a viable integration layer.

Let's do an exercise on IT architecture. Consider a website that displays data from a product catalogue. What do you want your CMS to do? ▶ Should your CMS know and understand the product data and control the overall appearance of the website? ▶ Or are the CMS and the product catalogue simply two sources of data to be displayed on the website? The difference between the two approaches is significant and the implications are far-reaching. Looking at the platforms on the market, there are fans of each approach. We see solutions such as Uniform or Hygraph that embrace the diversity of data sources. And we see integration platforms like Conscia, StreamX.dev, Enterspeed and others that emphasise the need for separation of concerns and advocate data integration at a separate layer. Questions around this topic sparked a lot of discussion at the recent CMScamp and we - Marta Cukierman and I - agreed to capture the wisdom of the group in a blog post. Eventually, we turned our discussion notes into 12 topics that can help you find the right option for your case. Speaking of #CMScamp, I would like to thank Michael Lukaszczyk, Herbert Cuba Garcia, Stefan Priebsch, Michał Cukierman, Nik Jordanov for the great discussion and Volker Graubaum and Janus Boye for bringing us together. CMS is not designed to be an integration layer. If you want to have scalable, performant, resilient site that uses data from multiple source systems, it cannot be done with a CMS in the center. > It's hard to scale, because there is a single (monolithic) application that is deployed to a single machine. The application holds everything, so if you want to scale the search, you need to scale all application, not just a search module. Deploying a CMS to multiple regions and synchronizing data between the instances is costly and hard to maintain. > It can be a performance bottleneck. All the requests from all over the world goes through a cable to a single physical server. The server itself is not optimized for performance (how many req/sec can a CMS without cache handle? 30-40 at most.). Cache can be helpful, but not everything can be cached. > It's often a single point of failure, what can be a cause of an outage. If the CMS is down (and it often is), the whole site is down. > CMS database is not designed to hold information like a product data. How many SKUs can you import to a CMS without breaking the performance? > Loading data into a CMS often requires batch jobs, that takes hours. Real-time data is better. For customers and operations.
