💔 50 women allegedly killed by men in the UK so far in 2024. Each one of these lives represents a heart-breaking loss and a reminder of the ongoing epidemic of violence against women. Eleven women were murdered in 16 days in Australia. At least 62 women have been killed through acts violence so far in 2024. Sadly, we know that number is going to rise. Seven First Nation women have been killed since June in the Northern Territory alone. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women experience even higher rates of gender-based violence; with ongoing impacts of colonisation, systemic discrimination increasing risk. Violence against women is prevalent in every community, commonly perpetrated by someone they know. It is more important than ever, that we as individuals, families and as a community, demand an end to men’s violence against women, children and diverse communities. We must act now. 16 Days of Activism against gender-based violence starts today!  We must all act together as a community to drive change, locally, nationally and internationally. Look out for our tips here for the next 16 days for managing this preventable issue. Open Support provides critical support for women who are fleeing domestic violence and abuse, and offers long term services to help with recovery, and empowerment to break the cycle. Break the Silence: Speak Out Against Gender-Based Violence When we stay silent, when we look the other way, we become complicit. Silence condones abuse, emboldens perpetrators, and perpetuates the cycle of violence. Keeping quiet about Gender-Based Violence (GBV) isn’t a solution, it only gives perpetrators more power to harm women, children, and vulnerable individuals. This issue can no longer be dismissed as a domestic or personal matter. Globally, 1 in 3 women experiences physical or sexual violence in their lifetime, often at the hands of an intimate partner. In Uganda, 56% of ever-married women women aged 15-49 have experienced spousal violence, and 1 in 4 girls experiences sexual violence before the age of 18. These are not just numbers; they represent lives shattered and futures stolen. We must break the silence and challenge the culture of denial and blame. This isn’t just a United Nations human rights issue, it’s a community issue, a family issue, and a personal issue. Waiting to speak out until it happens to someone close to us is not acceptable. Every act of violence we ignore or justify allows it to thrive in our communities. The shame of GBV doesn’t fall on survivors; it falls on all of us when we fail to act. Today is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. Every 10 minutes, a woman was killed by a partner or family member in 2023. The crisis of gender-based violence is urgent. The Department of Health joins other Agencies across the Tasmanian State Service, participating in the UN Women’s 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence and the Walk for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and Children. The Department rejects all forms of violence. Today, my client, Abuse Hurts, is launching their Make a Difference, Be a Leader campaign, which is designed to raise awareness about domestic and intimate partner violence in Canada. Violence against women is a significant issue in Canada, which is evident in the various statistics available to all of us. Recent numbers from 2022 tell us that a woman or girl is killed every 48 hours through gender-based violence by all types of people however, 90% of the accused are usually male (Canadian Femicide Observatory for Justice and Accountability, 2024) . We learned that with intimate partner violence specifically, we see statistics that say “on average once a week” (Canadian Femicide Observatory for Justice and Accountability, 2024) or “one every six days.” (Canadian Womens Foundation, 2024) These statistics are unacceptable.
