The demand for cleaner energy can and will put a strain on the nation’s electrical grids. The stress of a high volume grid and worsening weather emergencies is a recipe for disaster. Slower emergency restoration times can cost the lives of citizens and first responders in cases of serious disaster. Even mild storms have the potential to incapacitate cities and towns if grid sustainability is compromised to meet environmental goals. We must prioritize the strength, stability, and efficiency of electrical grids to best manage the increase in distribution demands. At Eversource Energy, we take a thoughtful approach to our innovative and multi-faceted transmission programs that upgrade the region’s electric grid while achieving multiple goals. Our recently completed Eastern Connecticut Reliability Program is no exception. The $190 million suite of upgrades to Eastern CT’s grid will improve reliability for more than 600,000 residents, make the system more resilient to extreme weather and other issues caused by climate change, and help the state keep pace with the demands of increasing electrification and integrating clean energy.
