Tristan Brown’s Post

Throughout the past 12 months I have been fortunate enough to be part of the 2024 Australian Institute Of Sport Coach Mentorship program. As part of this program I was allocated WAIS Swimming Head Coach Ben Higson as my mentor. Ben had a profound impact on the Western Australian Institute of Sport Swimming Program during his time in charge (he recently resigned to return home to Scotland) and it has been a fantastic opportunity for me to witness how he has led that program. The program under Ben's leadership (with the support of a much wider team of coaches and staff), secured some standout results at the Paris 2024 Games, in particular with Olympic Debutants Iona Anderson and Josh Yong returning with medals. I was quite lucky to have had my mentor in the same building here at WAIS, which made connecting with Ben and getting to know him a much simpler process. Ben has been very generous with his time and even made the effort to join me in the coach boat to experience my office for a day. All the whilst trying to pack up his life ahead of his next career move during his final week here in Perth. There have been many highlights throughout our interactions, but it is hard to go past the challenge he provided me of coaching two WAIS swimming sessions in the pool in the aim of improving my coaching (despite my serious lack of Swimming expertise). Thank you to the athletes for their patience! 😂 I look forward to remaining in contact with Ben, thank him for his support and wish him all the best with his next endeavours in Scotland and for his final commitment with the Dolphins at the World Short Course Champs this month in Hungary.
