Whenever I speak to investors and founders in KL, the common issue holding the ecosystem back cited is that Malaysian companies tend to not think regionally or globally. I think that’s starting to change. In fact, just yesterday I spoke to a Malaysian founder who was building a fintech company serving users primarily in Philippines and Indonesia. NonPublic is excited to partner up with our friends at AppWorks Sophie Chiu who we have invested with across the region to discuss and share observations of how we have seen companies successfully expand across the region. Especially so given Appworks’ deep access to the Taiwanese market, a fairly large one in itself. Equally looking forward to the reflections from Chen Chow Yeoh who co-founded Fave and has angel invested in numerous Malaysian startups. Ask around and founders usually point to Chen Chow as one of the key ecosystem builders in the country. The ecosystem across Indonesia 🇮🇩 and Southeast Asia continues to evolve, often viewed as the next major frontier for growth and opportunity. With a growing number of startups in recent years - we have experienced our fair share of successes, wins, challenges, and upsets. Attending this year’s NextHub Global Summit by hub.id and Nexticorn was refreshing and reenergizing. It provided a powerful platform to engage, exchange ideas, and learn about the next wave of innovation and growth in the startup scene. 🌱🌳🫱🏾🫲🏼 My three key takeaways: 1. Multi-market growth mindset: More founders are embracing a multi-market growth strategy while simultaneously building a strong foundation in their local markets - a balance that’s critical for sustained success. 2. Rise of B2B tech startups: There’s notable growth in B2B startups focused on specific use cases that are fit-for-market, steadily building traction and making a meaningful impact across sectors. This will provide the core fabric to foster further innovation. 3. Strengthening ecosystem: The ecosystem is getting stronger with increasing support from corporates (including global powerhouses), government programs, accelerators, and angel syndicates - a critical factor in fostering long-term growth. As we navigate the defrosting of the tech winter, there’s a renewed sense of optimism.
