In the wine industry everyone always says let’s give the consumer what they want and need. Isn’t that a bit boring now when we watch how Fashion doesn’t care about that at all! They love creativity and innovation and creating things that they think are cool and awesome and how could anyone else not think so. Why? Because they believe in individuality, in creativity, in fun, in newness, in innovation, in connectivity, in past present future integrated. So why aren’t we doing this in wine? Is Luxury Fatigue Hitting Korea? Jewelry Sales Tell a Different Story Is the Korean luxury market experiencing a decline, or is it just part of a broader trend of luxury fatigue? Sales data for the first half of 2024 indicate a notable slowdown in luxury fashion sales through department stores, the primary distribution channel for luxury brands in Korea. Among the 20 brands surveyed, average sales growth reached only 3%, with 11 brands ending the period in negative territory. Gucci and Fendi reported the most significant declines, with sales down 24% and 26%, respectively. Chanel, although still the top choice for handbags among Korean women, for the first time saw a 3% sales drop since opening its first boutique in Korea in 1997. Jewelry, however, remains a bright spot within the luxury sector, with several major brands experiencing double-digit growth. In department stores, Boucheron sales rose 28%, Bulgari 26%, Van Cleef & Arpels 20%, and Cartier 18%. These data suggest two trends: first, in uncertain times, Korean consumers are gravitating towards timeless luxury, best exemplified by jewelry. Hermes also falls in this category as the brand sees surge in sale of more than 20%. Second, stagnant income growth and the resumption of travel are prompting consumers to rethink luxury spending.
