Questions are currently being raised in the European Parliament about the financing of civil society organisations by European funds – Here is our reaction ⤵️ Civil society is the backbone of European Democracy 🌍 Civil society organisations are vital partners in building a fairer, greener, and more inclusive Europe. Our work strengthens EU policymaking by fostering transparency, nurturing trust, and advancing shared priorities like climate and ocean action. Surfrider Foundation Europe is one of the beneficiaries of the Life Programme, the Life Programme is the EU’s funding instrument for the environment and climate action. The LIFE programme ensures civil society participation while making sure our organisations follow the highest standards of transparency and accountability. Operating grants undergo rigorous evaluation, annual external audits, and monitoring visits. All recipients are part of the Transparency Register, providing clear public access to their activities and funding. 💬 Engagement is not a risk—it’s the foundation of democracy. Civil society amplifies citizen voices while remaining fully compliant with EU funding guidelines. Through this collaboration, we ensure effective, accountable, and inclusive policy implementation to meet Europe’s greatest challenges. 🔗 Read our letter to EU institutions on EU funds for civil society from more than 30 NGOs ✉️ https://lnkd.in/ezz4cBvN

The Scanlon Foundation Research Institute's 2023 "Mapping Social Cohesion Report" is insightful, timely and somewhat unsettling. Nevertheless, it is an invitation to a deeply necessary public conversation. It is an awkward conversation, and one in which many of us might not be 'qualified' to participate. Only the first part of that last sentence is true. It's not 'qualifications' we need to have this [or other types of awkward] conversation. It's a willingness to listen to, and respect, different voices. It is an authentic curiosity and openness to the experience of the other. It is an acknowledgement of the dignity inherent in each of us, even if your views collide with mine. Yes, it is easier for me to type these words as I peer into my screen than it is to look someone in the eye as they challenge my worldview. And I guess my challenge, and perhaps that of many of us, is to learn to have these types of conversations that invite human connection and not diminish it. Here's to social cohesion. Here's to human dignity. (And here's the report... https://lnkd.in/d_W22CVU) #socialcohesion #humandignity #connection #conflict
Late last year Kate Middleton, Chief Political Correspondent for The Saturday Paper, shared her views on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) on the tensions in Australia's political and social context. Kate makes reference to the Institute's 2023 Mapping Social Cohesion Report and its findings in her insights. These issues raised persist and remain a cause for concern to our nation's social cohesion today. You can read our full report here: https://lnkd.in/d_W22CVU

Today marks the beginning of National Reconciliation Week. This week is a time for all Australians to come together, to learn about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people's shared cultures, histories, and achievements, and explore how we can each contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. The National Reconciliation Week theme for 2024, Now More Than Ever, is a reminder to us that no matter what, the fight for justice and the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people will — and must — continue. We embrace the importance of reconciliation and the significant role we can play in it and are committed to increasing opportunities and improving outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals, families and communities. As an organisation, we have a strong commitment to increasing opportunities and improving outcomes for First Nations individuals, families and communities. Our Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) formulates the plan to take meaningful action and advance reconciliation. A revised approach in our RAP Governance Structure will see us continue to work together and make significant steps towards reconciliation through the continued development of an innovative RAP.
