Introducing the run.events Speaker Directory 🌟 A quick backstory: There are almost 4000 speakers in run.events who at one point submitted a session, so we thought: how cool it would be if they could present their speaking portfolio to all the interested event organizers out there. Event organizers, on the other hand, could then easily search and browse through the speaker directory and find the speakers with the right topics for their events. A real win-win situation!   Fast forward to today: We made it happen! Earlier this week, we introduced the first version of the run.events Speaker Directory! 🗣️ In short: Speakers can create their public profiles, upload their session portfolios, stage photos, and many other things. Their profiles are fully SEO-optimized, which means they will rank well in search engines, thus increasing their overall visibility on search engines.   We are still missing the search bar, but that's on purpose as we want to wait a few weeks until a significant number of speakers create their public profiles before we add the search option. Moreover, we are doing some AI magic to help you spot the best speakers for your events. Stay tuned – this is going to be great! Probably not- but I have a very high level of production quality that I’m seeking. That’s my nature. And quite a few registrants have shared with me how professional the whole registration sequence and member hub is. First mission accomplished! Today I now get time off (post run through) to celebrate my aunts 80th birthday. 🎁

I’ve just about recovered from Web Summit, and the lessons I’ve learnt aren’t what you think. They’re pretty basic… With over 71,500 attendees, there were plenty of people to talk to & connect with. I loved the electric energy, the enthusiasm and the multitude of ideas.  I loved connecting and listening to the founders exhibiting their brands. 👉 So I was pretty surprised that most founders couldn’t explain the benefits of their business. And this includes me too. I challenge you to explain the problem you solve in one sentence. 👉 I didn’t watch that many presentations or pitches, but those I saw were pretty boring (sorry), with the exception of Valentina Milanova 🇺🇦 - which was a masterclass in presenting & deserved a bigger stage. I’m not a great presenter either, but practice makes perfect. And you can get help. Speak to Alexandra to help you with your next presentation. 👉 People want to have fun, even at business conferences. A highlight for me was having drinks with Alexandra Fulford with a surprise brass band. They brought joy & sense of fun and people couldn’t stop smiling & dancing. The Night Summits were another hit. Chatting to people to find similar values and finding connection. Sharing stories and exchanging experiences. There were plenty more ‘learnings’, but these are fundamental for every business. I'm not planning to go to any IRL conference this year. Yes, everyone says it's a great way to grow your business. No, it's not worth burning out every single time because conferences are - in general - just not built for introverts. For me, an ideal conference would look like this: > No loud music. Anywhere. Ever. Please don’t make me yell to make myself heard – for 3 hours straight. > Longer, learning-focused sessions with breakouts for discussions. Learning for implementation is endlessly more fun for me than sessions focused on inspiring ideas without a clear “how to implement this.” Having content-related discussions means less (or no) small talk - yay! > Bringing back “extracurricular activities” and play! I don’t mean giving out swag or doing a raffle. But over the years, the most exciting conversations for me were happening in that magical space beyond “networking” and “learning” modes. In many cases, it was going out for a meal. But it can also be an excursion or any shared activity. What does your ideal IRL conference setup look like? Do you want to be a Moderator at the next CXL Live? Here's what's in store for you, if you become one: (FYI the conference will be rebranded this year 😳 announcement soon) — Free ticket + Speaker/Moderator dinner party at one of the best-known experimentation conferences+networking events. When and where do you need to come? Austin TX, Oct10th-11th (Exp workshop by Ron Kohavi on 9th) We need moderators for the networking table portion of the event. Moderators facilitate hand-curated sessions where we match people together who are working on the same problems in the same industry... Keep in mind that you'll need to be comfortable with facilitating these discussions where people try to solve the problems they share. That doesn't mean you need to make the discussion innovative or profitable. Just ensure everyone has the time to speak (and nudge those who don't like talking!) Note: you must be an in-house practitioner of experimentation/testing/cro within marketing/product/data/engineering/UX/Design etc. This 'moderator' role is what sets this conference format apart from all others. It's the hub of the reason why you go to events. This role is the fascinator of the networking and how everyone gets to participate, everyone at the conference contributes to the conversation.

Going to an Open Space event may be scary... what... there's no predefined agenda? That's total chaos! What if there's not a single topic that interests me? How can I know in advance whether it's worthwile getting a ticket, since I don't know who the speakers are? Now, when I think about it, the last conferences I went to I mostly enjoyed hanging out with the folks that were there, and I usually think that the breaks are too short to really deep dive into some conversations... so with Open Space we can always decide to _not_ go to a session and have that conversation. Or we could even decide to propose a session on a topic that's dear to our hearts... So, if you don't have any plans for the last week of August, I can definitely recommend you take a look at Agile Lean Europe (ALE), the nomad conference that takes place in a different city each year. Not only is this conference hosted based on the Open Space principles, it's also one of the few conference I know that are designed to be inclusive towards partners and families! Because - let's face it - going to conferences may be awesome... and still this is also spending some time away from one's family. So last year I joined the conference in Vilnius with my two youngest teens, Daphné and Sébastien. And imagine my surprise when on the pre-conference workshop day, two of the organisers from the Vilnius team: Remigijus Pielikis and Denis Vanpoucke asked Daphné whether she'd be okay with playing the piano during lunchtime for the whole conference attendees... and she accepted! Maybe you weren't there and if that's the case you may enjoy a snippet of her music with the video below. This year's conference will take place in Budapest from August 28th until August 30th - with a pre-conference day on August 27th. I'll put the link for registrations in the comments below.
