In one of my most recent letters published in the South China Morning Post SCMP on 5 August, I discussed the dwindling crowds at Hong Kong's Temple Street night market despite the government's "Night Vibes" campaign. I contended that the campaign failed to address concerns such as safety and noise within the congested Yau Tsim Mong district. I suggested organising night markets in more expansive locations, such as Kowloon Park, to better safeguard residents' quality of life. Additionally, I recommended moving Temple Street to Park Lane Shopper's Boulevard to invigorate local commerce. Ultimately, I concluded that the "Night Vibes" campaign had faltered, and the government requires grander, more prominent events to revitalise Hong Kong's nocturnal economy sustainably, rather than merely prolonging the operation of the Temple Street market. Exciting updates for mainland visitors to Hong Kong and Macao? 🫣🚨🇨🇳 The Chinese regulators have raised the duty-free shopping allowance for mainland Chinese tourists visiting the cities to HK$16,100 ($2,100) per trip. The measure begins on July 1 at six border crossings. 👇 More below. ✔️ Mainland visitors can now enjoy a higher duty-free shopping cap of 12,000 yuan for personal belongings obtained overseas vs the previously allowed 5000 yuan. At ports with duty-free shops, this cap increases further to 15,000 yuan. ✔️ In contrast, Hainan, a local duty free haven, has a tax-free purchase limit of 100,000 yuan per traveller per year. The new policy results from agreements under the Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement (CEPA), aimed at enhancing economic integration between mainland China, Macao and Hong Kong. ✅ Despite these and other careful steps, Hong Kong's tourism industry still faces significant hurdles. High prices, few new entertainment options, and competition from Shenzhen are major issues. ✅ Visitor numbers have not yet recovered to pre-pandemic levels. Today the city attracts only 60% of the visitors seen in the same period in 2019. ✅ Hong Kong’s government also called for residents to be more courteous and to "go the extra mile" in promoting Hong Kong's hospitality. 🤓 Boy, we needed that. But both residents and experts warn that full tourism and retail recovery faces greater barriers than just public demeanour. What’s your take on these new developments? 🤓👇 🎥: The video was taken during the hectic May Day holidays from last month. — #china #travel #dutyfree Insights via GT, SCMP, video via chinavideoroom ❗️ Finding value in my content? My article at Hong Kong Economic Times a week ago, analyzing the strugging tourism industry in Hong Kong. Hong Kong used to be the shopping paradize. However, due to various issues like strong currency, e-commerce and policy change in China, the positioning of shopping destination cannot attract tourists anymore. We need to provide differentiated experience. I have provided some recommendations, 1) focus on high end consumers; 2) develop more attractions at the Victoria Harbour; 3) reform the taxi industry; 4) organize more international events to showcase the unique east-meet-west culture; 5) allow all mainland Chinese for visa-free visit. Hopefully, "Pearl of the Orient" can return to its previous glory! https://lnkd.in/gXpwdP-P #hongkongtaxi #tourism #victoriaharbour

Tourism WA held its largest ever roadshow in Malaysia and Singapore last week as part of its successful 2024 Trade Mission to the region. Last held in 2022, last week’s mission drew more than 400 trade partners across four cities in Malaysia and Singapore, aiming to bolster relationships with partners across Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh, Penang, and Singapore. A consortium of 27 Western Australian operators represented the state across more than 4,500 business appointments, gala dinners, and cultural enrichment opportunities, further strengthening Western Australia’s robust business ties with Malaysia and Singapore. Singapore and Malaysia boast the second and fifth-highest international market visitation to Western Australia respectively, with 92,000 Singaporean and 48,000 Malaysian visitors in YE March 2024. Hong Kong's amazing neighbourhood - Shenzhen & More Many Hong Kong residents remember the old days when travelling to the mainland was a hassle and service quantity and quality was poor. This is no longer the case. While local businesses complain that residents are decanting across the boundary for weekends and holidays, this is an irresistable trend. The fact is Shenzhen - the immediate neighbourhood - has a lot to offer nowadays - and not just price. After all, Shenzhen is nearly twice as big as Hong Kong in size and has more than double the population - there is a lot of variety of increasing service quality there. The mainland - especially the immediate neighbourhood, is pushing Hong Kong to innovate - standing still is not an option. Hong Kong has to improve on both price and quality. See what you think of my op-ed in China Daily (11 Jan 2024) - https://lnkd.in/gfTSCrBh Premier Rugby Sevens The Mills Fabrica #hongkong #shenzhen #china #entertainment #tourismindustry #museums
