Diesel vehicles will take the longest time to transition to a more sustainable fuel source. #Biodiesel plants are already closing down, which showcases a bigger challenge associated with biofuels in general. Trucks, tractors, and other big equipment will have a slower transition to new fuel like #Hydrogen or EV. The fact that #Chevron is closing plants this soon should be eye-opening. Ethanol is used more frequently as a consumer fuel, which will be more rapidly affected by consumer vehicles. What does this mean for US #agriculture? Almost 90,000,000 acres in the US are grown for Ethanol or biodiesel. All of this land needs to be repurposed to a new use case if we see prolonged market challenges. How can hemp fiber help farmers transition or repurpose their land? Using natural fibers in plastic and #construction can augment mining while enabling an efficient use of land. Using better fatty acids for chemical conversion will be a cornerstone of chemical manufacturing moving forward. The ability to acquire both feedstocks from a single acre of land is key. Three of the four major feedstocks for #natural chemistry come from industrial hemp production Fatty Acids, Cellulose, Lignin. Lets help farmers adapt to the changing markets, together.

Spain’s Olive Oil Producers Turn Tons of Their Pits into Fuel–For Homes, Planes and Industry Accounting for half the production of olive oil in the EU, growers are now getting to sell olive pits as a valuable ingredient for biofuel. Hundreds of thousands of tons of olive pits are now being consumed in Spain every year to heat homes, power oil mills, and even airplanes. Pits make up between 8% and 10% of an olive crop by weight. During the pressing stage in the oil production process, the pits are squeezed out and separated before being washed and dried to create fuel similar to wood pellets used in certain domestic stoves, grills, and fireplaces. In the past, cultivators didn’t have a good idea of what to do with the olive pits, says Pablo Rodero, an affiliate with the Spanish biomass association, Avebiom. Avebiom estimates that 400,000 tons of olive pits are produced every year in Spain. That’s a lot of material to not know what to do with. “Now everything is used,” Rodero told Reuters. “Olives are like pigs: Nothing goes to waste.” One-third of all pits are now refined to remove as much moisture as possible and sold for around 300 euros per ton, which equates to around 6 cents per kilowatt-hour for home heating. The rest is used on the farms to drive the almazaras, or traditional olive mills, or sold to power industrial boilers. Petro company Cepsa uses olive oil pits as the key ingredient in a sustainable aviation fuel blend that powered 200 flights out of Andalusia’s capital of Sevilla airport last year. Biofuels, usually made from old cooking oil, have been pioneered as more sustainable jet fuel in China and other parts of the globe. It might seem strange to Americans who have to pay prime dollar for olive oil imports, but some farms and farming collectives pull in as much as a third of their revenue from pit sales.

𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗳𝘂𝗲𝗹𝘀 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘀𝗵𝗲𝘁 by UM-Center for Sustainable Systems, University of Michigan Biofuels, primarily #ethanol and #biodiesel, are liquid fuels produced from #renewable biological #sources, including plants, animal fat, and algae. Biofuels have the potential to reduce the #energy and #greenhousegas emission intensities associated with #transportation, but can have other significant effects on #society and the #environment. Depending on #demand, crop growing #conditions, and #technology, they may require significant increases in #cropland area and irrigation #water use, and can affect #food #prices. #Patterns of #Use Production 🔴 Ethanol, an alcohol blended with gasoline for vehicle fuel, is the most produced (82%) and used (75%) #biofuel in the U.S 🔴 The #US and #Brazil produced 80% of the world’s ethanol in 2022.3 94% of U.S. ethanol is derived from corn, while Brazil uses sugarcane as #feedstock. 🔴 In the 2023/24 season, 5.4B bushels of corn, 37% of the U.S. corn supply, were used as ethanol feedstock. 🔴 Cellulosic ethanol is made from feedstocks including corn stalks, plant residue, waste wood chips, and switchgrass. Making ethanol from these sources is more difficult because cellulose does not break down into sugars easily. 🔴 The U.S. had no commercial cellulosic ethanol production8 as of 2022. 🔴 Biodiesel accounted for 9% of U.S. biofuel #production in 2022. Biodiesel can be made from animal fats, grease, vegetable oils, and algae. In the U.S., soybean oil, corn oil, and recycled cooking oils are common feedstocks. Algae could potentially produce 10 to 100 times more fuel per acre than other crops. Biodiesel from algae is an area of ongoing research. 🔴 In 2022, the U.S. had 187 #ethanol #refineries and 59 #biodiesel production #plants. Many biodiesel #producers are reliant on federal tax credits and remain sensitive to feedstock (soybean oil) and energy (petroleum) prices. The Inflation Reduction Act (#IRA) reinstated and extended several biofuel tax incentives through 2024.
