NEW: A ranking of European rail operators shows that many are not offering a service worth the high ticket prices. In a first-of-its-kind ranking, T&E evaluates 27 rail operators across eight criteria including 💶price 🕝reliability ☕onboard amenities Trenitalia, SBB, and RegioJet get the best grades. Trenitalia stands out for its travel experience, SBB is the most punctual operator in Europe and RegioJet has some of the most affordable tickets. In contrast, Eurostar’s low ranking reflects its steep prices and poor reliability score. High ticket prices are driving passengers away from trains. To unlock rail’s full potential, rail operators need to set customer-friendly fares, while Member States and the European Commission should ensure fair competition and lower rail tolls. Dissapointed by both the lightweight approach to this report and the almost criticless media coverage about it.
I think this report is really insightful and provides a deep understanding of the key characteristics that define high-quality rail services. As an Italian, I’m quite surprised to see Trenitalia in the top spot, especially considering the ongoing strikes related to workers' security and wages. However, I believe rail transport has great potential as an alternative to traditional options. By focusing on efficiency and sustainability, it could become a truly eco-friendly solution for transportation. To make this happen, it's crucial to make rail travel more convenient, affordable, and accessible. Policymakers, rail companies, and citizens all have a role to play.

Great insights, thanks for sharing! Students and young people care deeply about the environment, have the time to travel, and are tech-savvy—but they’re also very price-sensitive. We urge rail operators to offer more affordable fares for this segment. At www.stumob.com, we’re ready to bridge the gap and help close the attitude-behavior gap among Gen Z travelers. Let’s make sustainable travel the easy and affordable choice!
It is hilarious that you rank SNCB/NMBS in Belgium as the '2nd most punctual train operator in Europe'. They have a notoriously lax definition of 'punctual' compared to neighbouring countries. https://www.nieuwsblad.be/cnt/dmf20240209_93685873
Interesting report! To enhance the user experience, you might consider incorporating a dedicated grade in the rankings to assess ease of travel and evaluating the use of "Mobile Pay-as-You-Go" systems. Interestingly, some of the companies you've ranked are already utilizing these features.
How did you define the weights used in your ranking? I seriously doubt that pricing (25%) is significantly more important than reliability (15%). Would be interesting to add the European airlines to this comparison, including an overview why or why not such a comparison makes sense.
Me interesa. :)

1wDoes this ranking take into account the billions of Euro’s annual subsidies some railway operators get? Any serious ranking should not only look at what consumers pay but also what taxpayers pay. The Belgian public railways for example are offering a very poor service at a very high cost for taxpayers. Privatised railway operators offer mostly a better service and better value for money but can obviously not match the artificially low fares charged by subsidized loss making state owned operators Luk De Wilde
