Unlike other sectors where increased spending often leads to lower costs, healthcare is seeing a different trend—MSP fees continue to rise, creating challenges for organizations, staffing companies, and recruiters alike. From 2020 to 2023, we saw a significant increase in temporary labor spend, which, while coming down slightly, still remains higher than pre-COVID levels. Despite this, many MSP providers have raised their fees to over 7%. These higher fees are driving organizations to look for added value through rebates and incentives, while early payment discounts are becoming more common, sometimes even required. For those of us in healthcare recruitment, MSP fees directly impact how we can support our clients. The cost of managing requisitions, handling day-to-day functions, and covering VMS costs are all factors that influence the overall fees. These fees affect whether staffing suppliers want to work with a particular organization, influencing the rates we can offer and the competitiveness of our candidates. It’s important for us, as recruiters, to understand how these fees shape the staffing landscape. Are you familiar with your organization’s MSP fee structure? Have you considered how these fees could be affecting your ability to stay competitive in filling key positions? While higher fees might offer short-term financial perks through rebates, they could also limit supplier competition, potentially driving up rates and limiting talent options. On the other hand, more competitive fees could open the door to a wider pool of suppliers, improving rates and service quality.
