On a recent flight I was seated next to former President of two large public investment firms. Our conversation started with golf and, realizing I’m speaking with someone who has experiences I have never had, it shifted into me asking lots of questions. Here’s my takeaways from this 45-min conversation. He shared one story about the 2008 recession. He was only getting 3 hours of sleep during that time and his executive team was stressed to the max. He decided to call an emergency meeting at 6pm. Thinking it was to discuss next steps all the executives showed up, pen and paper in hand and ready to embark on the conversation. Instead, he asked them if they had seen the new Borat movie yet. They all said no. He said “that’s perfect, because that’s what we’re doing tonight.” And that’s what they did, eating popcorn and candy while watching a stupid slapstick movie. Another story he shared was when an executive reporting to him came up and was complaining about something that was quite trivial. He said to me “I had to practice emotional intelligence here because this exec was making $5mil a year plus bonus and here they were complaining about something so meanial. Here I am, having grown up in trailer park and this person was complaining…gaining emotional intelligence was a huge piece of my success otherwise I would have to him to eff off” A few other tidbits he shared: - Before any business, always makes sure to take care of the people visiting and their spouse/family (if applicable). Once family is good to go, then business will flow better - Surround yourself with people smarter than you that you trust and will challenge you - Prior to a meeting, know enough about a topic to hold a basic conversation. The people who really know the topic will hold the conversation, but this shows that you are engaged with them and you’ll learn from them. - Face to face interactions will always trump remote work/calls. People want to be seen and heard, in the present. (He shared of an experience as an AVP grabbing a beer with a SVP who told him his attitude needs to change with how he interacts with his peers and direct reports to be successful. He shared this advice was worth more than any MBA program.) This was an incredible experience. Sitting next to this person you’d never know he was a millionaire, except the way he treated the flight attendants and others surrounding showed me the mindset that matters!
