Telecommunicators Week is wonderful but often feels like “one and done.” Telecommunicators need to be visible the other 51 weeks of the year. Recognition of their vital role will improve morale, to be sure. But enhanced visibility has a far more important purpose. It will convince lawmakers and public officials to think differently about them, which should lead to better compensation, which in turn should improve retention. It will establish in the minds of the public that this isn’t just a job, but a profession, which should improve recruitment, both in terms of candidate quantity and quality. At a time when the 911 community is suffering from an acute staffing shortage, improvements in recruitment and retention are sorely needed. I’ve recently noticed a pattern of long-standing Civil Servants, particularly at a senior level, making a change either into the Private Sector or branching into contracting and/or consultancy services. Is it budget cutbacks making it difficult to deliver? Bureaucracy? Hitting a ceiling? Navigating the uncertain landscape in Government ahead of the election? I’m keen to know people’s thoughts on this but regardless of the reason, there’s a lot of uncertainty and doubt at all levels - which is why I want to help. Over the next couple of weeks, until the election, I will be blocking out my diary from 12 - 3pm on Friday afternoons for one-on-one sessions of “𝐅𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐅𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐲𝐬” Feedback Fridays will be a chance to get recommendations on writing, updating and improving your CV, interview tips, gaining insights and general advice on how to market yourself in a competitive market. Hybrid working options in roles that can feasibly allow it, should consider this as a norm to adverts. It supports a more inclusive environment and I think it can prove widely beneficial to the employee and employer. It is nice to see it becoming more widely accepted

Excellent reporting by Ray Smith about a study by ADP Research of trends in the young college grad job market. Along with Sam A., I'm a co-author of the study at the center of this article from The Wall Street Journal, and yet I still learned something by reading it. For example, to corroborate our findings about Austin, Smith spoke with the manager of education and workforce policy at the Austin Chamber of Commerce. And then Smith tied each point in the story to a perfect example from a real live young person. This a fine example of how public-facing research from the private sector combines with gumshoe detective work by a top-notch reporter to tell a compelling story grounded in the facts. And by the way: The whole study was Sam's idea, as were the radar plots comparing hiring, affordability, and wages within the same metro area.
