Researchers from University of California San Diego School of Medicine and the Salk Institute have found that a form of intermittent fasting, called time-restricted eating, could improve the health of adults with metabolic syndrome, a group of conditions that increase the risk of heart disease, diabetes and stroke. The study, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, revealed that the time-restricted eating significantly improved key markers of cardiometabolic health, including blood sugar and cholesterol, and hemoglobin A1c. "Metabolic syndrome, especially when paired with prediabetes, represents a critical tipping point in which the risk for developing type 2 diabetes and heart disease is greatly increased," said Pam Taub, co-corresponding author of the study and professor of medicine at UC San Diego School of Medicine. "We're hopeful the findings of this study can help others who are looking to address their metabolic syndrome and reduce their risk for type 2 diabetes." #Lifestyle #Intermittentfasting #diets #faddiets #heartdisease #diabetes #stroke #bloodsugar

Have you seen the movie Sanju? or heard the famous song of that movie “Baba Bolta Hain Bas ho Gaya”…. If not, please listen to this song after reading this post.. U will understand why! Recently there has been a news in the headlines stating “ 16:8 intermittent fasting linked to 91% higher risk of cardiovascular death: Study” which is referred to a recent information being released by the American Heart Association. The following points will help you understand the context and limitations of the study: 1. The findings of this study have not been peer reviewed or published 2. The study collected data from more than 20,000 adults based on only 2 days of eating, as part of a national survey conducted from 2003 to 2018 and compared this data with the people who died in the US from 2003 through December 2019. 3. Based on this eating pattern of “only 2 days” the researchers concluded that people who had an eating window of eight hours a day mimicking the 16:8 intermittent fasting diet pattern (please note mimicking and not intermittent fasting) were 91% more likely to die of heart disease than people who ate over 12 to 16 hours a day. 4. The findings also indicated that overall, following any form of time restricted eating pattern DID NOT lower the risk of dying from any cause.. (So, how was the conclusion stated as a headline arrived at?) 5. The study has not yet been published, and AHA has simply shared a press release about it.. 6. Following is the statement of Dr Joseph Diabes, DO, an interventional cardiologist with Northwell Health, “I do not think the American Heart Association did any justice by putting out this abstract that was not fully complete and poorly designed, knowing it would create a stir”. 7. Megan Kamath, MD, a cardiologist at UCLA Health says, “Two days of eating data is a limited amount of time when looking at outcomes such as cardiovascular and all – cause mortality. She also noted that there “is limited information” about what people ate during their eating windows.. 8. Additionally, the study relies on survey data which is self - reported data which can be a bit tricky at times 9. The study also lacks information about the other lifestyle risk factors for cardiovascular disease, like physical activity levels and tobacco and alcohol use (The above information has been sourced from an article in verywell health – VW News – Health News, by Korin Miller, published on March 22, 2024. For the link to the full report, please check the first comment to this post) So, I believe it is self - explanatory that how important it is to read the full reports of studies, as only the Headlines can be misleading at times….. 🔔 Intermittent fasting has been gaining popularity as a way to lose weight and reduce inflammation, but a recent study presented at the American Heart Association's conference has flagged it as a serious health risk. The study revealed that adults following an eight-hour time-restricted eating schedule have a 91% higher chance of death by cardiovascular disease than those eating within the usual timeframe of 12-16 hours per day. It's important to weigh the potential benefits of any diet or health trend against the risks before making a decision. Stay informed and make informed choices about your health. #IntermittentFasting #HealthRisks #AmericanHeartAssociation Check it out:- https://lnkd.in/dbAM2fE9

The Struggles Behind Diabetes Management for Food-Insecure Individuals Managing a chronic disease like diabetes mellitus is challenging😫. Now imagine doing so without knowing where your next meal will come from😓. In a recent presentation I did in class, I discussed the article, “Food Insecurity and Glycemic Control Among Low-Income Patients with Type 2 Diabetes.” This topic resonated deeply with my experiences with some patients I have seen during my practice as a dietitian👩🏼⚕️. Many patients who had poor glycemic control shared that they struggle to maintain a diabetic-friendly diet, often substituting healthier options with cheaper, high-carb, low-nutrient dense foods due to financial constraints and food insecurity. The study confirmed what I’ve seen: there’s a strong link between food insecurity and poor glycemic control. Beyond difficulty in following a diabetic friendly diet, the emotional burden😔 of managing diabetes under financial strain leads to chronic stress🤕, which raises cortisol levels and exacerbates blood glucose levels through gluconeogenesis. This creates a vicious cycle where both physical and mental health suffer. But here’s the twist⚡️: While it’s difficult, maintaining a healthy diet within financial limits is possible. However, many food-insecure individuals lack the knowledge, time, and planning skills needed to make better choices. Food insecurity isn’t just a social issue; it’s a clinical barrier and as healthcare professionals👩🏼⚕️🧑🏾⚕️, especially dietitians we need to tackle this from all angles: access, nutrition education, and emotional support. Interventions for food-insecure patients living with diabetes shouldn’t stop at providing a list of “healthy” foods I believe we can go further by: ✅-offering practical cooking tips for affordable, nutritious and tasty meals🍳 ✅-teaching patients cost-effective meal planning ✅-providing support systems that make healthy choices more accessible and achievable Ultimately, these strategies can help reduce mortality from the complications that arise from poor diabetes management. What strategies have you found effective in supporting food-insecure patients with diabetes ❔ #DiabetesCare #FoodInsecurity #HealthEquity #PatientManagement #PublicHealth

I love hearing from you about how my tips for heart disease prevention and awareness are not just reaching you but your family members, friends, and loved ones. I have gotten over 10 direct messages over the last 48 hours saying “thank you for encouraging to monitor blood pressure at home, I just found out my husband has high blood pressure and now we can be more proactive about it through nutrition.” ⚠️ High blood pressure is SILENT and taking it 1x a year in the doctors office is NOT enough. High blood pressure can silently cause: - Heart enlargement - Atherosclerosis - Heart failure - Strokes - Damaged blood vessels, id endothelial dysfunction - Heart arrhythmias - Kidney disease - Cognitive decline - Vascular dementia - Eye damage - Nerve damage - Sexual dysfunciton ⭐️ Let’s be in the know — know your blood pressure and encourage others to know it as well - if it is above 120/80mmHg PLEASE do NOT ignore it! ⭐️ We must address this through science based nutrition! The great news is it responds VERY WELL and QUICKLY to science based nutrition. ⭐️ Share this with someone you love and encourage them to purchase a home BP cuff (nothing fancy, a $30 one from your local pharmacy will suffice!). ❤️ It can potentially save a life and enhance quality of life tremendously if you take action timely! 💫 If you need support on your heart health journey, join my next 6 week heart optimization group program! It begins on July 12th and spots are limited. This study has shed light on the alarming link between soft drink consumption and obesity in the UK. The research revealed that soft drink consumption is a significant contributor to the country's obesity epidemic, with a staggering 42% of adults and 22% of children classified as obese or overweight. Pakistan faces a similar situation, with a growing obesity problem and a culture of consuming sugary drinks. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Pakistan has one of the highest rates of obesity in South Asia, with: 41% of adults (aged 25-49) classified as obese or overweight (Pakistan Demographic and Health Survey, 2017-18) 19% of children (aged 5-19) classified as obese or overweight (Pakistan Demographic and Health Survey, 2017-18) 55% of adolescents (aged 13-18) consume sugary drinks daily (Global School-based Student Health Survey, 2019) -71% of adults (aged 25-49) consume sugary drinks daily (Pakistan Demographic and Health Survey, 2017-18) The study's findings are a wake-up call for Pakistan, highlighting the need for urgent action to address the soft drink and obesity issue. This includes implementing sugar taxes, regulating marketing and sales, increasing public awareness campaigns, and promoting healthy alternatives. By acting now, Pakistan can prevent a potential public health crisis and ensure a healthier future for its citizens.

Grateful to be a part of a team whose #research, published in Nature Communications, suggests a link between a tax on sugary drinks and a decrease in childhood asthma hospitalisations in England. Our findings suggest that implementation of a UK tax intended to reduce childhood #obesity may have contributed to a significant unexpected and additional public health benefit in the form of reduced hospital admissions for childhood #asthma.

Absolutely unethical to spread an abstract/ poster presentation like this - spreading infodemics and getting attention in social media. Time restricted feeding (TRF) is only one form of Calorie restriction(CR). There is enough evidence to suggest the role of CR diet in overall health including cardiovascular health through multiple anti-ageing pathways. This study has a lot of recall bias and assumption - can't jump into a conclusion. I would like to ask the investigator, what is the hypothesis or theory he is going to explain about this so- called association of TRF and cardiovascular mortality.
