This Week in History On July 1st, 1898, Colonel Theodore Roosevelt’s 1st US Volunteer Cavalry charge Kettle Hill, Part of San Juan Ridge, in Cuba.      Roosevelt’s journey to the head of the Rough Riders began with a double tragedy: the death of his wife and mother on the same day, in the same house. The anguish drove him westward to clear his mind, and he landed in the Dakotas, where he made his way as a gentleman rancher. Returning to New York, Roosevelt authored several books, became Police Commissioner of New York, and continued to visit the rough and tumble west for hunting and relaxation. When war came, he assembled men from east and west into the 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry, known as the Rough Riders. Remember when politicians could unite people? Yeah, me neither. But looking uphill into the face of a determined foe, a future President rewrote history by mixing men with different skills, experience, and backgrounds to create a winning combination.     Generations of investors have been reminded about the benefits of diversification, mitigating risk by avoiding concentrated positions. It is true that limiting your risk requires a broad-based investment approach. Equally important is how you diversify. After all, you can invest solely in the S&P 500 index and call it a day, claiming, not unreasonably, that 500 stocks are enough to diversify you. But how much diversification are you really getting when we’re sitting at a 50-year high with 36% of the S&P 500 concentrated in the ten largest companies? Enduring the rough rides in corrections and bear markets, it may become obvious that diversification is part of risk mitigation, but it is not all. Like human beings in general and military units in particular, investments have their own strengths and weaknesses at different times. These mega-cap tech behemoths have been crowned AI’s biggest beneficiaries. But are they? Remember that paradigm shifts like the internet and AI make the future even more uncertain.  Only one tech name from 2000’s top 10 remains there today. When stodgy sectors like utilities rally based on the power needs of AI, you know that disruption is at hand, and winning combinations today will probably shift in the coming years. Understand the terrain ahead of you and assemble your team wisely because your foe is no less determined.
