It’s fantastic to see another major player in the gaming industry, Atari’s Infogrames, placing game preservation at the heart of its business strategy. As highlighted in a recent article, Atari CEO Wade Rosen is committed to preserving and re-releasing classic games in ways that respect their original integrity while making them accessible to modern audiences. This move further underscores the increasing importance of game preservation, not just as a cultural necessity but as a viable business opportunity. Recent reports, such as the 2023 Video Games Europe Key Facts and Newzoo’s insights, have highlighted the growing significance of preserving our gaming heritage. Initiatives like #StopKillingVideoGames, which has gained record popularity, are part of a broader trend recognizing the need to safeguard video games' cultural and historical value. With GOG already making game preservation a core aspect of its business model, it’s encouraging to see this movement gain more momentum across the industry. As more companies and initiatives join forces, the preservation of gaming history is becoming an essential focus that will benefit both the industry and players alike. https://lnkd.in/d_Mz8NM5

For over a decade I believed that product comes before marketing. I was wrong. In today’s mature gaming market if you build it, they won’t come. Futureplay Games Merge Gardens is the perfect case. After the launch, the title scaled only to plateau and begin to decline. 📉They’ve exhausted the golden cohorts and it seemed like the title shrink to obscurity. 📈Yet a year later, Merge Gardens was soaring! It look unstoppable. And most importantly, it looks and felt different. 🤌🏼The game was rebranded! 💡The radical innovation on the marketing and narrative allowed the game to reach the product metrics it was dreaming of. And what’s even more interesting is that the team partnered with Martin Mohr and his team at Bond Creative Agency to truly stand out in the market. If you want to hear all the details about the mobile game comeback of 2023, head on to the Deconstructor of Fun (link in comments). #gamedev #branding #performancemarketing #gameindustry

The gaming industry's landscape has undergone a fascinating transformation in recent years, with a pronounced surge in the production of remakes and sequels. While revisiting beloved classics and continuing successful franchises undoubtedly has its merits, there's an intriguing discussion to be had about the potential impact on the creation of new intellectual property (IP). Remakes have become a prevailing trend, offering a fresh coat of paint to cherished titles from the past. Nostalgia plays a pivotal role, allowing both seasoned gamers and newcomers to experience timeless narratives with modern technology. However, as the industry leans into the allure of revisiting the familiar, the question arises: are we risking creative stagnation? Sequels, on the other hand, are the lifeblood of established franchises, weaving a continuous narrative that captivates fans. Yet, there's a fine line between evolution and repetition. The challenge lies in maintaining the essence of what made the original games great while injecting enough innovation to keep the experience fresh. As remakes and sequels flourish, the introduction of entirely new intellectual property seems to be slowing down. The industry's appetite for risk-taking, innovative storytelling, and novel gameplay experiences may be overshadowed by the safety net of proven successes. It's crucial to strike a balance between honoring gaming legacies and fostering an environment that nurtures groundbreaking, unexplored worlds. The key lies in finding equilibrium. Embracing the rich tapestry of gaming history is essential, but not at the expense of sidelining the birth of new narratives and genres. Developers and publishers must navigate the delicate dance between honoring the past and shaping the future, catering to both the nostalgia-driven market and the hunger for innovative, uncharted gaming realms. What are your thoughts on the current trend of remakes and sequels? Do you believe it's hindering the emergence of new IP, or is it a necessary evolution in an ever-changing industry? Share your insights, and let's spark a dialogue on the future trajectory of gaming creativity! #gaming #gamingindustry #intellectualproperty

Even so, Alan Wake 2’s success - and possibly its increasingly knitted connection to Control, including Control’s AWE crossover expansion and Alan Wake 2’s upcoming apparent FBC-involving DLC The Lake House - has seemingly encouraged Remedy to gather the cash needed to take total control of the entire Control series, paying 505 Games €17 million for “all publishing, distribution, marketing and other rights”. That total is apparently equal to “the amount that 505 Games has paid for the development of codename Condor and Control 2 to date including a minor premium”, with Control’s sales said to have made a net revenue of around €100m for Remedy and 505. Any future Control games will also be fully owned by the Finnish developers.
