Capturing hearts and minds is crucial." This powerful insight from Biogen's CFO, Mike McDonnell, stood out in our recent conversation. In the latest installment of the Bold Advances in Health Care video series, Mike emphasized that their Fit-for-Growth initiative is all about engaging the entire team. By allowing teams to redesign their organizations from scratch, Biogen fostered creativity and commitment. This approach ensures that everyone is truly invested in the company’s success, making the transformation more effective and sustainable. We also discussed Biogen's recent acquisitions, focusing on diversifying portfolios with the aim of improving patient outcomes, and the pivotal role AI will play in enhancing efficiency. In my years of working alongside incredible leaders in pharma, biotech, and medtech, I've learned so much about the challenges they face. Many of these leaders are open to innovation at the tactical level, but strategic decisions often rely on traditional tools that aren't evolving at the same pace as other industries. It’s humbling to witness the dedication of these bright minds who continue to push forward despite the limitations. My hope is that we can begin to better equip them with the tools they need to thrive in their roles and ensure no patient misses out on life-changing therapies. I recently shared some thoughts on this topic here: https://zurl.co/Bnsy Would love to hear your thoughts.

"Going forward, leading biopharma commercial leaders will need to think more broadly about the role of the commercial organization and its value to the company. The effort will entail carefully balancing growth and efficiency while considering shifting industry dynamics; embracing data and technology to create insights that improve decision making; and broadening their own skills and capabilities to include, for example, calculating and weighing risk, leading through uncertainty, and managing an increasingly complex enterprise." "Commercial leaders who successfully evolve their personal role and the organizational operating model will be positioned to help bring the next generation of biopharma innovation to patients." (McKinsey & Company; "Modernizing the biopharma commercial model to maximize patient value")

A valuable lesson I've learned from a career in high-growth organizations: scale is something to combat, not pursue. Traditional organizational models and top-down leadership structures are in some ways medieval holdovers, unfit for our current pace of technological innovation and modern customer experience. No wonder why the F500 turns over faster than a hand in Texas Hold 'Em. The GenAI revolution may finally accelerate a transition to more collaborative and decentralized operating models. As biotech and medtech companies continue to evolve, one thing remains clear: the integration of innovation and governance is crucial for long-term success. Having had the privilege of serving on multiple boards during critical junctures—most recently, Morphic Therapeutic's successful acquisition by Lilly—I’ve seen firsthand the importance of strong, informed leadership at the intersection of science, finance, and corporate strategy. As we enter a new era of personalized medicine and advanced technologies, the role of the board in guiding not just financial outcomes but also ethical, clinical, and strategic innovations is more critical than ever. In my experience, fostering collaboration between clinical innovators and corporate leadership can unlock new opportunities and drive meaningful progress. Looking forward to connecting with forward-thinking organizations that are ready to elevate their impact!
