Shopper research within several Food Discounters has shown that shoppers LOVE to discover a well known brand if it’s offering great value. Tracking shoppers throughout these stores also proves that shippers and displays close to the till do have a good opportunity to be seen, if executed well. This Heinz display in Aldi uses bold, branded colours to draw attention, a simple call to action message and a powerful visual to tempt shoppers. It maybe too late to drive conversion however, if shoppers only see it once they are unloading onto the belt (shoppers are unlikely to want to leave their position to grab it). The unfortunate dumping of baskets in front of the product creates a further barrier to purchase. Nothing is ever perfect in retail! #shopperinsight #heinz #shopperactivation #aldi

As a #retail #supplychain guy, I'm almost obsessed with stories like this one. While the purpose of these #price comparisons is to illustrate which retailer can leverage their supply chains to help consumers save the most money and live at their best (see what I did there?), they also illustrate that some retailers want their consumers to "expect more" out of their products while "paying less" than what specialty stores charge (*ahem*). In this story, it's pretty clear that for products that depend on volume, Walmart is a clear winner in the mass discount grocery category. However, the price comparison against Target isn't perfect, as some products are clearly targeted (no pun intended) at different consumer segments. Case in point: boxed mac n' cheese. While the price difference is rather eye popping, Target's is organic. For ice cream, Target's is non-dairy (although the dairy version is not too much cheaper). Target's marinara sauce is clearly labeled "free of artificial colors and preservatives" while tortillas were a good 2 inches bigger. All of these point to a very well-known fact, that the two retailers serve different core consumers and thus their supply chains are ever-so slightly different to best serve their customers. The biggest tell: Target customers are more comfortable with paying a $5 premium on Liquid IV than Walmart's. Both retailers are industry leaders and have unique competencies that the other strives to develop. At the same time, their merchandising and pricing differences are a reminder that it's still important to not have identical value propositions.
I took the same grocery list to Walmart and Target. Both chains had what I needed, but some of the price differences shocked me.

Long regarded as lower-cost imitations of household brand names in cookies, condiments and toilet paper, retailers see a chance to invest in "private label" products at a time when shoppers are looking for any break from high prices. And increasingly, their goal isn’t just to emulate national brands, but to beat them on quality and selection. Great Value is great... but Walmart hopes Bettergoods will be even better. (Better for the bottom line, that is.) "Already the country’s largest grocer, the company is introducing a line of premium food called Bettergoods this year, aiming to attract new, often higher income shoppers more frequently and to encourage current shoppers to spend more." Is it silly for a retailer to have two private labels? No, it's actually quite smart. In my Retail Marketing Strategies course, I include an article in the syllabus awkwardly called “Two Tier Brands: The Benefic Impact of a Value Brand on Perceptions of a Premium Brand”, originally published by the Journal of Retailing in 2011. The article contains three interesting findings: 💡 When a retailer offers ONE private label store brand, consumers expect it to be of lower quality even when it's described as a premium brand. 💡 But the quality perception of a PREMIUM store brand increases in the presence of a VALUE store brand! AND... 💡 Quality perceptions of a VALUE store brand are not affected by the presence of a premium store brand. In English? "Great Value" should continue to be perceived as great value for Walmart shoppers AND should help the new Bettergoods brand be seen as more premium -- win-win! Over the years it became too similar to Great Value and its packaging didn’t stand out to shoppers... Current Sam’s Choice products—about 200 items—will shift to Great Value or Bettergoods or disappear"
