A year ago I didn't know what a power forward was, despite my pretensions of Raptor fandom. Today, Power Forward Communities is one step closer to helping install $2B worth of electrification upgrades in homes and communities across America. I am not a mathy person, but that's a lot of heat pumps. And a testament to the awesome collaborative work of so many on the Rewiring America team and all our partners beyond — Enterprise Community Partners, LISC, Habitat for Humanity International, and United Way, and the hundreds of communities that have signed up to champion this work. What a neat thing to breathe life into this, our climate work. Electrifying Everything for Everyone is a broad mandate, because 'everyone' is a broad group. These funds will help the portion of everyone that could not electrify without them. Because everyone deserves clean electric machines, and the right to choose them. 'Don't despair, decarbonize!' is something I repeat to myself quite often, but somedays I feel more electric oomph than others. Today is one of those days.
Rewiring America is honored to share that Power Forward Communities, a new coalition of which we are a member, has been awarded a $2 billion, seven-year National Clean Investment Fund (NCIF) grant from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Through our partnership with some of the country’s most trusted housing, climate, and community investment groups, including Habitat for Humanity International, Enterprise Community Partners, Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), and United Way, we’re purpose-built to help transform the housing sector, save homeowners and renters money, invest in stronger communities, and meet national climate goals. Investing in Community: Unlocking Power and Wealth! Community ownership and local investment can transform our neighborhoods. When we invest in local businesses—whether through stock, revenue sharing, or debt—we’re directly helping them grow, creating jobs, and bringing essential services to our community. Unlike big corporations, local businesses hire our people and understand our needs. Investing locally isn’t just about making money; it’s about building power and creating a future that benefits us all. Yes, it’s tough when resources are limited, but investing in our own businesses transfers power back to the community and builds lasting opportunities. Let’s invest in ourselves and take control of our future. #CommunityCapital #LocalInvestment #EconomicEmpowerment #InvestInYourCommunity #BuildingWealth #SupportLocal #ImpactInvesting

Yesterday, I talked about how empowering communities challenges the status quo. Let’s explore what this resistance REALLY costs us: ➡ Communities remain dependent, unable to unlock their full potential. ➡ Corruption thrives when control over land and resources is centralized. ➡ The cycle of poverty deepens as people are denied the tools to create their own futures. At Commonlands, we’ve witnessed the difference shared ownership makes. In Uganda, communities are taking charge of their land, building trust, and driving local growth. Women are leading change, farmers are securing their livelihoods, and families are breaking free from generational poverty. But here’s the question: If this model works, why isn’t it happening everywhere? The answer lies in priorities. Shifting power to communities means letting go of top-down control, and not everyone is ready to do that. But we can’t afford to wait. True progress happens when communities are trusted to lead their own change. Thoughts? #communityempowerment #economicinclusion #socialimpact #landrights
Social Entrepreneur | Founder & CEO Commonlands | Empowering underserved communities with secure land rights and credit delivery.
Empowering communities sounds like common sense, but here’s the truth 👇 Not everyone wants it. Power brokers that thrive on control often resist social impact initiatives that give people independence. Why? Because control over land, credit, and resources means control over people. When you empower individuals to own their land, access credit, and make independent decisions, you shift the balance of power. But here’s the thing: True progress doesn’t come from centralized control—it comes from shared ownership and trust in people. ... Who do you think should hold the power; governments or communities? #CommunityEmpowerment #SocialImpact #EconomicInclusion #LandRights

A sector under pressure, registered providers of social housing are in need of new funding models. From sustainability-linked green loans to cross-collaboration with other industry providers, there are several potential options on the table. However, all signs are pointing toward the need for government intervention. With a general election imminent, a revitalised approach to funding the social housing sector could be the answer to all registered providers' problems. Our new head of funding, Jon Coane, shares his advice with Social Housing Magazine. As the saying goes, “—it’s about to get real.” However the EPA awards, we’ll work to ensure these decarbonization and resiliency resources are deployed into affordable housing through lenders working directly with and in the communities who stand to benefit most from these resources. A new chapter and new sets of challenges loom large that we’ll continue to approach with creativity and curiosity. It’s been inspiring to witness deep collaborations, frank dialogue, and mission-focus. Let’s get our wrenches out. Learn by doing. All folks have a right to healthy, affordable, and sustainable housing. https://lnkd.in/gjWAhPF2

There is a financing gap for nature estimated at US 598-824 million annually, according to the Paulson Institute. Cities have a vital role to play in protecting nature. However, there are systemic gaps to doing this. My colleague Anastasia Mourogova Millin unpacks it in her blog post with these points: ➡️The inability of capital markets to finance nature. ➡️Public investments that create private wealth. ➡️The absence of community governance mechanisms recognizing the value of nature. https://lnkd.in/ggiDB3nN Give it a read and share your thoughts. #naturebasedsolutions #nature #greeninfrastructure #naturalinfrastructure #planning #urbanplanning #municipalfinance #publicaccounting #realestate #publicpolicy #biodiversity
