U.S. growth, hybrids are centerpieces of Nissan's new midterm plan Nissan's new midterm business plan, The Arc, touches all corners of the Japanese carmaker's global business. ATSUGI, Japan — Nissan Motor Co.'s new midterm business plan, The Arc, is a sweeping road map with detailed steps for the next three years and long-range goals through 2030. CEO Makoto Uchida's vision touches all corners of the Japanese carmaker's global business, from regional sales and new technologies to financial targets and corporate partnerships. Here's a look at what's in store for Nissan in the U.S. market, a critical driver of Uchida's plan to grow global sales by 1 million vehicles in the near term. Product renewal Nissan plans to launch seven models for the Nissan and Infiniti brands through March 31, 2027. That includes new nameplates and full-model changes. Widen the scope to include minor model changes and about 78 percent of the lineup will be freshened by then. The younger model mix will help expand U.S. sales by some 165,000 vehicles over the next three years, according to the plan. That would build on the 898,796 vehicles Nissan Group sold in 2023. New technologies Nissan will diversify its electrification offerings as U.S. consumers show more interest in hybrid vehicles and EV sales growth moderates. In the next three years, Nissan will introduce the third generation of its e-Power series hybrid system to the U.S. It will also introduce a plug-in hybrid offering based on the powertrain in Mitsubishi's Outlander PHEV. From the fiscal year ending March 31, Nissan will also introduce pure electric vehicles based on a new modular EV platform that is billed to deliver huge cost savings and much shortened lead times. Factory upgrades Nissan will deploy to its U.S. plants the advanced manufacturing technologies it pioneered at its Intelligent Factory in Tochigi, Japan. That factory uses highly automated processes, including several world-first techniques, for a 10 percent production cost reduction despite building more complex vehicles, such as the Ariya. Nissan's assembly plant in Canton, Miss., will get an update in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2027, and its Smyrna, Tenn., assembly plant will be revamped by the fiscal year ending March 31, 2029. Meanwhile, Canton and the Decherd, Tenn., powertrain factory will be overhauled for EV production in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2027. Modular manufacturing will achieve a 20 percent reduction in per-vehicle production time. Battery buildup Nissan is preparing three new batteries for electrified vehicles: a next-generation nickel-cobalt-manganese lithium ion battery; a lithium iron-phosphate battery; and a solid-state battery. To supply them, the carmaker plans to secure 60 gigawatt hours of additional capacity in the U.S. through the end of the decade. This will help the carmaker's EVs meet local procurement requirements for government incentives.
