Investing in prison reform is crucial, but have we considered that focusing on preventing youth from entering the system might be even more effective? By enhancing education, community support, and job training, we address the root causes of criminal behavior. While internal prison programs are important, they sometimes feel like just a temporary fix. Prioritizing prevention over reform will save youth lives.

Reentry services are a crucial element of a successful post-incarceration transition back in to the community. Having a comprehensive plan ahead of release can go a long way to improving a person’s circumstances after they return home. Here’s a link to the VADOC website with various reentry resources. If you have a loved one in jail or prison, and they are thinking about what life will be like post-release, reentry planning and reentry services can make it easier! reentry-resource-packet-2023.pdf (virginia.gov)

New #SoTL publication - in an unexpected place. Delighted to have this published today in issue 275 of the Prison Service Journal, with fabulous prison service colleagues. We write about why and how to include guest speakers from the prison service in HE classrooms. We conclude: "Our experiences of hosting and being guest speakers from the Prison Service in higher education classrooms has been very positive. Conversations with students indicate they have found it useful, and although we can see scope for developing our approach and recognise the strengths of alternative formats, we are also convinced that there are benefits to both the students and HMPPS in what is essentially a demystifying engagement." https://lnkd.in/eaQxrN_Q

Access to effective and culturally meaningful support before and after release from prison is critical to preventing a cycle of reincarceration. To build a justice system that is focused on keeping people out of prison, we need to build re-entry roads back into communities and models of wrap-around support for those leaving the justice system. REENTRY & RELATIONSHIPS When you sit in a room with a group of women all sharing similar stories about the behavior of their loved ones released from prison, it's clear there's a widespread issue that's often ignored. The same behavior across different ZIP codes points to a common denominator: prison. We can't pretend that prison is a cure-all. Working for an institution that houses citizens doesn't grant the right to ignore the issues stemming from a prison sentence. We must choose to be part of the solution rather than part of the problem. #postincarcerationsyndrome #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #domesticviolence #reentryreform #reentry #prison #prisonreform
